Ace's Story

I am Ace, a 5.5# Papillon / Chihuahua who was born January 2019 so I am about 7 years 8 months old based on medical records. I was rescued off of the streets about 2 years ago. I lived with a family who had 4 large dogs, 3 cats and 2 small children. I was often left at home alone with the other pets. The big dogs hurt me so then I was left in a crate for 9 or so hours each day while the family was gone. That home wasn’t working out well for me as I had traumatic experiences there that have left me frightened and skittish. So, it takes me a while to feel safe and warm up to you. During this highly anxious time for me, there are some simple things that can be done to help me feel safe. My foster can give you those details.

My foster says I am adorable. Once I can relax and feel safe, I love to be in your lap, beside you, following you around the house, and sleeping in your bed. I often lay on my back asking for belly rubs. I will also nudge your hand with my little nose to let you know I want some attention. I usually go outside on my own to potty although sometimes I mark inside the house. I have used the pee pad and I am crate trained. When I feel anxious or scared, I like to go to my safe place in my crate to relax. I ride in my crate in the car quietly. I’m not real fond of leashes as I don’t have a lot of experience with them. My owners said I know “potty” and “kennel”; but no other commands. They also say that I like to play with balls and play fetch in the yard. My foster hasn’t seen me do that though. My owner said I don’t like people that are wearing hats and that I was fearful around men. However, one of my fosters is a man and I am doing OK with him. So maybe it was just that one man. I have learned to be gentle when taking treats and am learning to wait patiently taking my turn.

I would be happy as an only dog or being with other dogs that just let me do my own thing. I have basically ignored the other foster dogs as I prefer to be with my person. A quiet home with an available lap would be just perfect. I don’t want to be left alone so much again. Can you give me a home like that?
