Abu the Great's Story
Meet Abu the Great!

***Foster Family Update!***

Are you torn between getting a cat or a dog? Great news - Abu is basically both. A dog in spirit, a cat in attitude, and a couch pillow in physical form.

Abu didn't have the easiest start to life before being rescued by our partners in Mexico in 2023, but he's made an incredible comeback. He has happily reclaimed his health, discovered the magic of soft furniture, and now lives each day as a proud, full-time couch potato. But don't be fooled - when it's time for a walk or a trip to the park, he busts out a joyful door-side happy dance that could earn him a solid "10" on Dancing With the Paws.

Abu enjoys cuddling... on his terms, of course. By evening, he switches fully into "do not disturb" mode - very much like a cat who has clocked out for the day. He has done well with children he has met, but would thrive in a home where kids understand that nighttime is Abu's personal zen hour.

He's been good with other dogs, and while we don't know his thoughts on cats, honestly... he might secretly be one. What we can confirm is that he is fully house-trained and will politely let you know when nature calls.

Abu is quirky, chill, and refreshingly low-maintenance. He's looking for a loving home that appreciates a dog with the soul of a philosopher, the heart of a survivor, and the bedtime boundaries of a Victorian gentleman.

If you're ready to adopt a one-of-a-kind companion who brings equal parts charm, comedy, and cuddle-by-appointment, Abu might just be your guy.

This boy and his fellow travelers are now ready to meet their forever families! If you've been waiting for your chance to welcome a rescue pup into your home, don't miss out. Submit an online adoption application through our website to learn more, arrange a meet-and-greet, and take advantage of our flexible 3-7 day in-home trial to make sure it's the perfect match.

Will you be this boy's lucky new hero?

steps to adopting

(OUR ADOPTABLE DOGS ARE IN SEPARATE TEMPORARY FOSTER HOMES BETWEEN BEND/CENTRAL OREGON AND THE GREATER PORTLAND AREA. THEREFORE, MEET AND GREETS ARE NOT DONE AT OUR FACILITY. TO LEARN MORE, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ADOPTION APPLICATION ONLINE AND OUR ADOPTION PROGRAM MANAGER WILL REACH OUT TO YOU WITH FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MEET YOUR NEW PUP!)

The first step to adopting a dog from SDH is to complete the adoption application. First click on the "OUR DOGS tab up above, and then click on the orange colored "Fill out an Adoption Application here" button to start the process). Once submitted, please expect 3-5 business days or sooner for processing and to hear back from us. Once you are pre-approved, your adoption application will remain on file with us for 1 year and it can go towards multiple adoptions within that 1 year time frame before it expires.

To finalize an adoption you must sign the adoption contract and pay the full adoption fee. The adoption fee helps cover our costs. On average, per dog, it costs SDH between $500-$700 for vetting/medical/sterilization, transport and other rescue related expenses. All dogs are rescued and do not transport to SDH until they are healthy and ready to be adopted. All dogs are examined by a veterinarian before they fly, which includes sterilization whenever possible, given standard vaccines and rabies (if age appropriate). Most dogs are sterilized before they come into our program, however if this is not the case we will spay/neuter them once they arrive at our cost.

Upon their arrival, all dogs are seen for a wellness exam by SDH's medical team. Once the adoption is finalized, any further medical care or treatment will not be covered by SDH, unless discussed prior with our medical team. All known issues are disclosed to the best of our ability prior to finalizing the adoption.
