Meet Abby

Darling Abby is ready for her own forever family!

DOB Oct 2013, Abby is a spayed female Collie mix who joined our rescue when her original owner became terminally ill and asked us to welcome her, complete her vetting and find her a wonderful new forever family.

ENERGY LEVEL: Low
Abby likes to sniff around outside. She isn't a fan of going out unless she is going for a walk so does need encouragement sometimes.
She doesn't care for toys but she loves treats and very food motivated.

GOOD WITH DOGS? Yes as long as they respect her space until she has settled in and feels comfortable with them.
Abby is a complex lady, she is fine with my dogs but does need time for proper intros and respecting her body language.
We are seeking a dog free home for Abby, not because she is aggressive but because she prefers this and deserves to be the center of attention after the stress of losing her mom.

HOW DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG RESPOND TO DOGS MET ON WALKS? It depends on the dog and sometimes its ok then other times i see her getting a little anxious. Then i call her name in a high happy voice and either start jogging or getting her redirected to something on the ground to sniff.

Abby LOVES car rides, but does become anxious when she sees other dogs from the car, and will bark
I'll call her name in a happy voice and redirect her attention until we pass.
Poor Abby simply didn't have a lot of socialization in her first home and this is all new to her, but with consistent training and positive reinforcement, helping her to feel safe, she is improving consistently

Due to Abby vocalizing when she sees other dogs, she is not a suitable candidate for attached housing.

Abby can be nervous meeting strangers, especially men, and especially in her home, but if allowed to come to then on her own at her own comfort level, especially if treats are offered, she does warm up quickly and loves snuggles on the couch

She has met older children who are respectful of animals and loves them. Abby just loves the attention.

GOOD WITH CATS? Yes. She doesn't bother with my cat.

RESOURCE GUARDING BEHAVIOURS ? No, none.
HOUSETRAINED? Yes
CRATE TRAINED? No, She is not destructive in the house when left alone loose.

DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG SHOW SIGNS OF SEPARATION ANXIETY? No-she is only alone for approx 5 hrs a day and usually just sleeps.

PLEASE ELABORATE ON YOUR FOSTER DOG'S LEASH SKILLS. Abby is good on the leash. She loves her walks and she will try and get out of the house as quick as she can. It takes a min to get her settled initially since she loves her walks so much.
She walks on a leash well and doesn't pull much at all. She is learning to sit before we cross the road

OKAY WITH MANIPULATIONS? Yes
Abby is not a fan of having her paws touched but just lifts them up to show her discomfort, and does not enjoy having her tail brushed (most dogs don't!)
Her family will need to brush her regularly due to her Collie coat, but in small grooming sessions, respecting when she is ready to stop.
She adores attention and is fine with handling

Abby has food sensitivities and requires a duck based diet, either raw (which she is thriving on now) or a very high meat/low carb, single duck protein diet.

Abby has learned to wait for her turn at meal times in a multi dog household and she sits before her bowl is placed in her raised feeder
She waits patiently.

Abby is housetrained and does go to the door to indicate that she needs to go out.

Abby loves to sleep on couches and beds, she is very well behaved in the house and is not destructive.

She is not an active dog but loves her walks, she does best on shorter more frequent walks, not long hikes.

Notes:
*No young children please, Abby thrives in a calm , quiet environment.
* Abby has already lost her original mom and been through a change into a foster home. She deserves a home that will be hers for the rest of her life, where her family is not older seniors at risk of being unable to care for her for her entire life. She would be an ideal match for newly retired families or someone in a calm household

*Must be located within Ontario Canada
*Inground/ground level Pools and ponds must be separately fenced from yard

Hobo Haven is located in St Jacobs Ontario.
For approved families, we require vet reference checks, home inspection via zoom, followed by in person meetings in St Jacobs ON for approved applicants.

If you are not willing to drive to this location to meet our dogs after you are approved, please do not apply. We do not meet elsewhere nor deliver dogs. Adoptions within Ontario only

If you are interested in applying to adopt a dog from Hobo Haven Rescue, please use this link to submit an application https://hobohavenrescue.ca/dog-adoption-application

Abby's adoption fee is a minimum donation of $400.
We have spent far more than that on her vetting and care since she arrived.
Adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip, bloodwork, age appropriate vaccinations, deworming, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and all vet care during their time with us.

For anyone possibly interested in adopting from Hobo Haven, here are a few, but not all, criteria to be aware of:

We require all serious applicants to watched "Petfooled" which is a free documentary at this link https://tubitv.com/movies/494913/pet-fooled
, or on Amazon prime or also a variety of other free video sites.

Our motto is "know better/do better" and we ask all adoptive families to be as committed to providing our dogs with quality nutrition as they are to providing love. This documentary is not advertising, purely just educational.

An adoption application must be completed and approved, including vet references as well as a home visit (Zoom during COVID), prior to meeting available dogs.
All dogs are placed in loving foster homes during their time with us, we do not have a shelter to visit.
We do not allow applicants to visit until pre-approved for adoptions. Our dogs are in private foster family homes, not in a shelter.
Any questions may be emailed to hobohavenpetrescue@gmail.com

Due to the high volume of applications received for our dogs, priority of replies will be given to applicants who meet the criteria mentioned in the pet's profile.

Please do not ask us to make exceptions, we set these protocols and policies for the dog's best interests which are always our highest priority.

Emails are best, our volunteers work full time and are often not able to answer or return phone calls in a timely manner.
