26Peanut's Story
Name: 26Peanut
Breed Mix: Terrier mix
Age: 2-3
Weight: 12 lbs
Dogs: Great – needs a mentor dog!
Cats: Unknown
Kids: Perhaps 8+
House-trained: Mostly (a few tinkle accidents in a week – leave a potty pad out and take him out every few hours)
Crate Trained: Dislikes it but tolerates for short periods
Leash Trained: Doing great with 2 mentor dog
Will not take pills. Is on topical heartworm/flea combination.

We have had Peanut for a few weeks joining our pack of two other small dogs about his size. First observation, it is absolutely essential that he be placed with at least one other dog. They clearly give him such calm and confidence and he has learned a lot from them already. With his mentor dogs, he has started to accept his harness/leash with ease and go on well-mannered walks (until he sees a deer or a person he doesn’t recognize and then barks). With daily short outings he has become confident and calm on his walks. This pup is a true lap snuggle bug (when he feels like it) but is also happy snuggled in a soft blanket or his dog bed – just depends on his mood at the time. He sleeps through the night next to his pack (and us) and has gone from no interest in food to a bit of a foodie (takes a little water and wet food topper on his kibble). He loves to follow his humans around (especially foster mom) but when mom is gone, he has jumped on foster dad’s lap too (no issues with men). There has generally been a human at home since we have had him and he just hangs out calmly (mostly with mom). When we both left, he has become anxious and has destroyed a few loose objects (mostly pens). Our neighbors said they heard barking from inside too so I would probably avoid him going to an apartment dweller. With time, I suspect he will calm more. Peanut is definitely a “play boy” when it comes to running with one of our like-minded resident dogs. They fly through the backyard at high speed having such a fun time – it is a joy to watch.
Additional opportunities: He is very skittish and catching him to put a leash on can be a challenge (first week) – so letting him drag a short leash is suggested so you can step on it. He is working on potty training but will use a pee pad when left out (we leave one upstairs and one downstairs by the back door) – take him out every few hours should help solve. He has done # 2 a few times in the house as well but will follow mentor dogs and do his business outside. We could probably have done even better at getting him out more often (we don’t have a doggy door). He does “lap guard” foster mom from time to time, but I toss him on the floor when it happens and tell him “none of that” and he stops. Given his somewhat nervous nature, I would not place him with young children – perhaps 8 or older.

If interested, we recommend submitting an adoption application at: www.foothilldogrescue.org

This dog will be available at Saturday’s adoption event at our rescue. Meet and greets are 11:00 - 1:00.
Our address is:
4131 S Shingle Rd suite 14
Shingle Springs, CA

Please bring all resident dogs and children that live in the household to the meet and greet.

Our adult dog adoption fee is $350 (with $5 processing fee if paid by card) and fee for pups under 4 months old is $400 (with $5 processing fee if paid by card). Adoption fee includes spay or neuter, rabies, DAPP and Bordetella vaccines, deworming, microchip, heart worm test and lifetime registration.
