26Jersey Mikes's Story
**Jersey Mikes will only be available for private meets and will NOT attend Saturday adoption events!**

Meet Jersey Mike’s!
Breed: Border Collie Mix
Sex: Male
Age: Approx. 1 Year old
Weight: Approx. 55 lbs.
House Trained: Yes
Crate Trained: Yes
Leash Trained: Yes, still learning manners
Kids: 10+ or dog-savvy kids
Cats: Dog-savvy cats with slow introductions
Dogs: Yes, but with management

Jersey has made encouraging progress across his recent training sessions. We focused on heeling and loose-leash walking, engagement, sits and downs, bed work, thresholds, settling in busy environments, and neutrality around other dogs. He has handled increasingly distracting situations well and continues to show appropriate social behavior around dogs both in training and during playgroups.
Heeling & Leash Skills
Jersey has been working on maintaining a more consistent heel position and following his handler during both structured heeling and loose-leash walking. In quieter areas, he is becoming increasingly consistent.
During his walk at Johnson Springview Park, squirrels were particularly interesting to him. Rather than allowing him to remain focused on them, we redirected him into heel and incorporated sits along the trail. He was able to reconnect with his handler and continue working.
In busier environments, Jersey has also practiced walking calmly as people and dogs pass. His ability to remain composed around this activity has been a strong part of his recent training.
Sits, Downs & Engagement
We worked on strengthening eye contact while Jersey is sitting, encouraging him to remain engaged with his handler rather than immediately looking toward everything happening around him.
His downs are improving as well. We have been reducing his dependence on the food lure and pairing the command with mild leash guidance when needed. Jersey still benefits from a lure on some repetitions, but his response time has improved, including when transitioning into a down from heel position.
Bed Command
Jersey has continued working on going to and remaining on his bed. We practiced moving between two different beds, using movement and enthusiasm to keep him engaged in the exercise.
He was rewarded when his front paws reached the bed, with additional praise when he completed the exercise by offering a sit. As his understanding grows, we will continue shaping this into a more complete and independent bed command.
He has also practiced simply holding bed, helping him learn that reaching the bed is only part of the exercise and that remaining there calmly is equally important.
Thresholds & Impulse Control
Door and gate thresholds were another important focus. Initially, Jersey wanted to rush through as soon as an opening became available.

With practice and clear reminders, he made excellent progress. Jersey reached the point where he could put himself into a sit while the gate was opening and wait until he was released to walk through. This was a great improvement in impulse control and understanding of boundaries.

Dog Neutrality & Social Behavior
Jersey has been doing very well around other dogs. He has held a sit while unfamiliar dogs passed nearby on their way into group class and remained calm without reactive behavior.

During public training, Jersey has not shown leash reactivity or concerning fixation on other dogs. He has been able to see dogs passing, working, and running nearby while continuing to respond to his handler.

Jersey has also been successfully integrated into dog playgroups and has not had issues interacting with the other dogs in those observed sessions. This gives us additional opportunities to reinforce appropriate social behavior alongside the neutrality expected when he is on leash and working.

Confidence & Public Exposure
Jersey has practiced settling around larger crowds of people and busy public activity. He can initially become restless when there is a lot happening around him.

At Johnson, we also worked around the water. Jersey was not particularly interested in going into it, so we did not make entering the water the goal. Instead, we practiced calmly hanging out nearby while other dogs played and ran around. Jersey did very well remaining composed despite the activity.

If interested, we recommend submitting an adoption application at: www.foothilldogrescue.org

This dog will be available at Saturday’s adoption event at our rescue. Meet and greets are 11:00 - 1:00.
Our address is:
4131 S Shingle Rd suite 14
Shingle Springs, CA

Please bring all resident dogs and children that live in the household to the meet and greet.

Our adult dog adoption fee is $350 (with $5 processing fee if paid by card) and fee for pups under 4 months old is $400 (with $5 processing fee if paid by card).
