The Animal Welfare Foster Program's Adoption Policy
An adoption application and home visit are required for Animal Welfare Foster Program pet adoptions. Pets adopted from the Animal Welfare Foster Program are current on all of their age-appropriate preventative healthcare. Animals older than 6 months of age have been vaccinated, tested for heartworms, treated for fleas and ticks, microchipped, dewormed, and are often spayed/neutered. Animals younger than 6 months of age have been vaccinated appropriately for their age, dewormed, microchipped and treated for fleas and ticks; it is the responsibility of the adopter to have the animal spayed or neutered at an age recommended by your veterinarian. Any other medical conditions are also treated unless otherwise noted. We ask that if you are interested in adopting one of our animals, please email our Adoption Coordinators at awfpadoptions@gmail.com and they will send you an adoption application. Because our animals are in foster homes, we regret that we cannot allow interested parties to visit with them before putting in an application. However, we are happy to answer your questions about the animal's personality prior to having you complete the application. Once an application has been approved (this usually takes a few days), we will schedule a meeting with one of our animals. Please note that we require all pets in the household be up to date on vaccinations. This includes dogs owned by roommates or parents - any animal that is sharing living space with your adopted pup. Dogs must be current on rabies, distemper, and Bordetella vaccinations, while cats must be current on rabies and distemper vaccinations. Dogs must also have a current heartworm test. The veterinary contact information provided in the application should connect us with the most recent veterinarian to allow us to confirm your pet's vaccination status. We only adopt our dogs out to homes where they will be kept as indoor pets - dogs will not be left outside without proper supervision. Upon adoption, we require adopters have a crate available as most of our dogs are accustomed to a crate. This will allow a smoother transition into their new home. The AWFP reserves the right to deny applications for any reason if we believe it is in the best interest of the animal and may include the foster parent's preferences as well as "gut feelings" when considering applicants. The current adoption fees are listed below: Dogs under 7 years have a fee of $250. Cats adoption fee are $100. We have a one week trial period for our adoptions, during which we will hold your adoption donation fee while you determine if the animal will fit in well with your family. Your adoption coordinator will review your pet's healthcare and behavior information at the adoption meeting, and will provide you with the medical paperwork. AWFP is run by volunteer veterinary students that have hectic and sometimes unpredictable schedules. We do our best to process applications and schedule adoptions as quickly as possible, however we appreciate your patience as sometimes we have our hands full. Holidays and summer months tend to slow us down due to jobs, travel, and an increase in adoption interest. Please plan ahead if you would like to adopt for the holidays as both students and fosters may be leaving town during that time.
