Tucker's Story
Tucker — A Resilient Survivor with the Sweetest Heart

Hi, I'm Tucker.

For a long time, I didn't know what it felt like to be safe.

I survived outside by myself, where other cats constantly bullied me, chased me away from food and shelter, and left me with scratches and injuries. I was always hungry, always exhausted, and always looking over my shoulder. The saddest part? Even after everything, I still wanted people. I still wanted someone to love me.

When I eventually showed up with a badly injured front paw, my rescuers knew I couldn't keep surviving on my own.

That's when they discovered I'd originally been trapped at an encampment in Oakland and relocated through a working cat program for rodent control. Somehow, I had survived on my own for months before finally finding the backyard where someone noticed I needed help.

Thankfully, those days are behind me.

Now that I've had time to settle into a foster home, everyone is discovering what a truly special boy I am. I'm incredibly affectionate and absolutely adore head scratches, belly rubs, and spending time with my people. One of my favorite things is sneaking into bed in the middle of the night for a few quiet cuddles and gentle pats before drifting back to sleep.

I also have a wonderfully playful side. Wave a wand toy, toss me a ball, and I'm ready to play for as long as you are. As my confidence has grown, I've started exploring more of the house during the day and have even found my voice—I love chatting with my foster family when I think it's time for another play session or a little extra attention.

I'm still learning that the world is a safe place, so quick movements can surprise me. But the sweetest part is that I always come right back. Every day I become a little braver, a little more relaxed, and a little more convinced that people are pretty wonderful.

Because of my past, I'll do best with someone patient who understands that trust takes time. I also appreciate when people listen to my signals during petting. If I've had enough, I'll give you a gentle tap with my paw to let you know it's time for a little break. I'm simply learning that I don't have to be afraid anymore—I can trust my person to understand me.

One other thing to know about me: after everything I'd been through living outside, my tummy needed a little extra care. I've been eating a prescription diet while my foster family helped get my digestive system back on track, and I'm doing so much better! I'm now starting the transition back to a regular diet, though my future family should keep an eye on my tummy and work with their veterinarian if any sensitivities pop up again.

Concerned about me being FIV+? Don't be! Cats with FIV can live long, happy, healthy lives, and there's lots of great information out there to put your mind at ease. If you'd like to learn more, here's a great resource from Cornell University.

After everything I've endured, I've discovered that what I wanted all along wasn't freedom—it was a family. A warm bed. A full belly. Someone to curl up beside at 3 a.m. because I finally know I'll still be loved when I wake up.

Maybe that someone is you.

Follow my foster adventures on Instagram: @our.foster.fam

Rescued in San Rafael, California.

Please note:
- Tucker has tested positive for FIV.
- Indoor only

For more information or to apply for Tucker, please go to:
https://www.givemesheltersf.org/adoption/cat.php?id=12401

[id=12401;ts=1788447622;src=pf]
