Tonka's Story

Tonka is a sweet boy who is about 3 years old. He came into the rescue after suffering from a life-threatening condition call a urinary obstruction. Tonka was successfully treated in the hospital for several days and started on a prescription urinary diet to try to prevent this from happening again in the future.

Tonka is a sweet boy who is a little nervous at first. He does not like to be picked up and held much but he loves to roll around on the floor and get pets. Tonka has not been seen playing with toys much although he is still recovering.

Tonka will need to be on the prescription diet for the remainder of his life to try to prevent this condition again. He currently eats Royal Canin Urinary SO wet and dry food. He has tried Hill's c/d wet food which he also liked. The food he currently eats is abut $65 for 24 cans and $60 for a 7 lb bag of dry food. Keep this in mind before inquiring about his adoption.

Other than his special food, trying to encourage Tonka to drink water with a fountain and keeping his stress levels low are the only ways we can try to prevent his condition from recurring. It will be imperative to monitor his urinations and have him evaluated by a veterinarian right away if any changes in his attitude or urinations are noted. Keep in mind, treating a full urinary obstruction at an emergency vet can cost $3000+. Tonka must go to a new owner that understands these costs and would be able to obtain pet insurance at adoption or cover these costs, should it be needed.

Please follow this link and check out the related articles at the end to read more about Tonka's condition.
https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951735

Tonka will not be available for meet and greets until the end of February as we let his bladder continue to heal. We do not want to cause stress and further delay his healing. In the meantime, we are accepting applications so hopefully he can go to his new home as soon as he is ready.
