TIGGER's Story

On November 29th, 2012 I received the following email from Ada resident Debbie Burke:    "We live in a fairly rural area and get our share of stray and feral cats.  About a month ago, a new cat appeared.  He clearly wasn't "feral" because he warmed up to us too quickly.  However, I noticed his ear had already been tipped, so I assume he was a TNR alumnus.  I continued to feed him regularly to see how friendly he was.  Within a very brief time - perhaps a week - he was rubbing up against me and throwing himself down and rolling around, begging to be petted.   Unfortunately, before I could decide what to do, I noticed one day he was walking on only three legs.  I put him in a carrier and brought him inside.  We have a 19 y/o CRF cat, so I had to keep him confined in our laundry room so as not to stress our cat. I took the stray - we call him Tigger - to Cascade.  He was great for the examination!  Never scratched or bit.  Dr. Anderson found some small bite wounds and felt he had been in a cat fight and one of the bites on his leg had become infected.  It was slightly swollen.  She gave him a shot of antibiotics and a dose of Revolution.  His ears were very gunky, but no signs of mites.  His fecal was also negative, but she gave us a dose of Profender to apply 48hrs later.  We scheduled to bring him back in two weeks for a recheck. His leg did heal.  He seems very content to be living indoors - even if it means spending most of the time in an extra large dog crate.  He consistently uses his litter box as well.  He still loves attention and is very happy to watch us go about our lives.   At his last appointment last week, he was tested for FIV and FeLeuk.  His Feleuk was negative, but he is FIV positive.  He received his rabies vaccine and initial distemper.  In two more weeks, we'll take him back for his distemper booster and a recheck on his fecal.   I realize that, because of his FIV status, I need to be more careful about finding Tigger a home.  Unfortunately, I can't keep him because I don't want to stress our elderly cat, and I don't want to confine Tigger to the laundry room indefinitely.  I am hoping that you can help us by either sheltering Tigger at Big Sid's or helping us find Tigger a home as soon as possible.  I will make sure that all the necessary medical work is done and can help contribute to his upkeep.   I appreciate any assistance that you might be able to provide." So, I put Tigger on our intake list and Debbie and I kept in touch, until finally on March 6th, 2013, we were finally able to welcome this darling boy (born in November of 2010 ( into Big Sids.  It was a difficult relinquishment for his rescuer, as she had grown to love him like her own, but I promised Debbie that is Tig didn't acclimate well, or if it ever came to pass that she could take him back that she was welcome to come get him.  But no worries thus far, as this gentle fellow instantly made a fast friend in Hamburglar, another of our shy guys, and the two have been thick as thieves in the intake suite.  He is very easy-going and makes furry friends fast;  at Debbie's he was good buddies with her big dog, so placing him into a home with other critters is going to be just what this doctor ordered!  He really is a nice boy with sweet soul who will make a wonderful addition to a family who wants to dote on a demure, darling of a cat!
