Thumper's Story

Thumper is an affectionate and gentle 5 year old female cat, spayed and up to date on vaccines. Here’s what her foster volunteer says about her:

How would you describe the cat's general personality? Thumper is a very sweet cat with 3 working legs. Her disability does not slow her down her however; Thumper is affectionate, inquisitive, resilient, intelligent, and brave! She’ll wait for you to come home every day, loves head scratches, and is happiest when she can curl up and nap on your lap or stomach.

Does the cat enjoy being pet? Thumper loves being pet. She definitely has her favorite spots to be pet. Occasionally, she doesn’t want to be pet and wants to relax by herself. If this is the case, she will let you know for sure.

If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet? Thumper loves being pet the most around her head the most.

Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched? She doesn’t like being touched on her paws the least. Other areas, she will tolerate depending on her current mood.

Does the cat come on your lap? Yes! Thumper loves to relax and purr on my lap. She climbs onto my lap when I am sitting in the chair or the couch. Actually, she is on my lap as I type this out!

Does the cat like to be held? She generally does not like to be held but will not mind it most of the time. Sometimes when I come back from work and she greets me, she will purr as I pick her up and give her the love she deserves!

Does the cat sleep in your bed? Yes, she does. Thumper loves to sleep on the bed with me every night. She likes to nestle in between my legs or climb on top of my stomach and lie there. I will usually let her do this and pet her a bit before I decide to go to sleep, at which point I gently nudge her off me. She will sleep in bed with you every night.

Does the cat seek your attention? Thumper does seek my attention. She loves to greet me when I come back home from work, and I always find her waiting for me in front of the door mat. She will also seek attention when she wants to play or is hungry for food.

Does the cat like to play? She gets zoomies for an hour or so between dinnertime and bedtime. She loves to play during this time, and you will know when she wants to play because she will start hunting the toys on the ground herself.

What are the cat's favorite games and toys? She loves the fishing rod toy the most, but she occasionally does take interest in small balls or small plushies on the ground.

How vocal is the cat? Thumper is a pretty vocal cat! She likes to meow when she greets me in the morning or when I come back home from work. She also makes very cute meows when she comes up to me for attention.

What kinds of sounds does the cat make? I have heard meows the most. I heard her hiss/grr at me when I tried to brush her in places she didn’t like (she is still learning to be friends with the brush), and when I had to towel wrap her to clip her nails. However, she is a very gentle cat.

Does the cat scratch a scratcher? Yes. She currently has a cat tower with scratchers built in, and she loves scratching it. She also likes to scratch the doormat.

Does the cat always use the litter box? Yes, I’ve only had trouble with her litter box use in the beginning when I gave her litter that she didn’t like. After I changed the litter to different type, she has no problem using the litter box and has not made a single mistake since.

What food and frequency is the cat currently eating? She is currently eating wet food twice a day (breakfast/dinner) and has dry food to snack on throughout the day.

Is the cat picky about food? She is not particularly picky, but she does get tired of food quickly. I have not seen her finish one small wet can food in one sitting. I’ve noticed that she likes to slurp the liquid part of the wet food, and that she will stop eating once the wet food becomes drier. I started mixing her wet food with more water, and she started eating a bit more.

What is the cat's favorite treat? Thumper likes Churus the best. She also likes crunchy treats like Greenies and Temptation.

Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances? Yes, when I touched her when she did not wish to be touched. She also gave me some warning signals beforehand with her tail. However, they were gentle swats and her paws did not even touch me; she just swatted the air in front of me.

Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you? Never.

Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you? Yes, when I touched her when she did not wish to be touched. She also gave me some warning signals beforehand with her tail. They were very gentle nips, just telling me to please stop touching.

Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)? Never.

To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful? Thumper is not particularly shy of fearful of new people or situations. She will be slightly cautious at first but will warm up very quickly. When she first came to my house, I was surprised how quickly she adjusted and warmed up to my place. When she got out of her carrier, she immediately headbutted me and wanted pets. She had about a day or so of hiding under the blanket in my bed and became active around the house after that. She never hides around anymore, even when I pull out the vacuum. The only time I’ve seen her take cover is when the fire alarm went off.

Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren’t covered by the previous questions? Thumper is a very clean kitty! She is very, very good about grooming herself, and spend lots of time during the day keeping herself clean. She will also lick/groom me when I put out my hand to her, which is very sweet.

She is also very observant and intelligent and understands vocal and body language cues pretty well. I have been surprised by this multiple times, as she would come when I beckon her to come, and go when I tell her to go. When I tell her to come up to the chair and point at it, she sometimes does it! Of course, being a cat, she sometimes doesn’t feel like listening to me, but she listens to me maybe 50% of the time.

In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt? I believe Thumper will be a wonderful companion to any home. Although she only has 3 legs, she isn’t defeated by the limitations, and will surprise you with her sweetness, intelligence, and resilience. Thumper is energetic, inquisitive, and playful, and will be your best friend for many years to come!

What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them? Thumper’s only challenge is having 3 legs to work with. However, that does not stop her from doing all the activities that other cats do! Thumper is a trooper when it comes to her disability: she still chases after toys, has zoomies around the house (she runs perfectly fine), uses the litter box well and covers her poop, and likes to climb to high places. The only trouble she has is jumping up to higher surfaces. However, this is an easy fix. For example, I’ve made it easier for her to access the bed by putting a stepping stool for her.
