Tamar's Story

All our kitties are fully vetted; spayed/neutered, FeLV/FIV tested, utd on rabies, distemper vax, dewormed, deflead and microchipped.

These kittens will only be adopted pairs. As of this writing (1/18/26), Tamar is 3.5 mos old and weighs a whopping 3 lbs.

Tamar, named after a female Mossad spy (from the BBC series, Tehran), came to us so sickly that the foster husband wanted her to have a tough girl name. She has lived up to that name; she is made of tough stuff with smarts and fearlessness. Tamar is one of only 2 females in a litter of 8 that were dumped in a degraded box on the steps of the Shelter before they opened - yes, it was freezing cold outside and they were screaming with hunger...estimated to be about 3 weeks old, the shelter is not staffed to bottle feed 8 kittens every 4 hours. They called us the day before Thanksgiving, and we said yes, we'd take them right away and the rest is a jam packed month of cleaning, bathing, medicating, feeding, washing linens and litter box scooping and scouring. It got much easier once healthy and weaned! The foster family had a volunteer Nanny Crew, with one coming each morning to help start the day. So this litter has only known humans as lovely givers and surrogate mothers. With so many handlers they are all unafraid of a posse of new people coming in, they run TOWARDS them. Just delighted for the company. Tamar is decidedly the runt of the litter. She is diminutive but don't let her petiteness fool you; she is tiny but fierce and gives the boys a good whopping. She is smart though, she has learned guerilla warfare and is excellent at ambushing and then running and hiding where the big boys cannot follow. Yes, she's a tom-boy, but with looks like a fashion model. Gorgeous with unique markings (classic Torbie), smart, affectionate, friendly, cuddly, playful, and brave. Think of her in human terms as the first to get snagged by the Alpha sorority; because they love the flashy good-looks and confident type (and she looks good in the purple blazers). Majoring in anthropology and living at the sorority house, she soon moves out into an apartment with some friends where she expands her skills and experiences, gets serious about her future. Tamar's perfect home is where she is an integral part of the family, get plenty of physical and mental exercise, and most importantly for her, cuddling and snuggling. She will only be adopted to someone who wants a baby and can make time for that attention. Sugarbaby is like this too.

If you are interested in meeting these kittens please submit an application by clicking this link; https://www.culpeperhumane.org/adoptions/application/
Once submitted, the vet reference you provided will be contacted (IF NO vet, please provide 3 personal references, may be family and friends if they have a cat that you interact with), and our Director of Adoptions will schedule a phone interview with you. If approved, you will be contacted by our Foster Coordinator for a (virtual) home visit. If approved, the foster parent is notified to contact you to discuss the kitten(s) and arrange the logistics for a visit. If both parties are committed to moving forward with an adoption, the foster parent is empowered to do same day adoption. Our rescue group does not have a brick and mortar facility, all our animals are home fostered in our foster volunteer’s homes. You will be visiting a private residence. The application does not oblige you to adopt, nor does the visitation; the application gives us more information to help ensure an appropriate, suitable and good match.

Not first come, first served, but the best possible match made.

Our policy is that we always take our animals back should it prove to be a less than perfect match, or if you are unable or unwilling to care for the animal any longer. We just don't want the animal to go back into the system. It is also our policy NOT to adopt to families with intact dogs or cats (unless there is a medical reason for not doing so). This is an effort to educate and support our national spay/neuter efforts to reduce the unwanted pet population.

We DO adopt to DC residents, parts of Maryland and all of Virginia. Occasionally we will adopt far from our epi-center, but will request your local humane society to do a home visit for us and act as our safety net. Preference is given to applicants within our epi-center.

Thank you for considering an unwanted and abandoned kitty, and being part of the rescue efforts.

Humane Society of Culpeper's Adoption Policy
The Culpeper Humane Society adopts to residents of the state of Virginia, Washington, DC and parts of Maryland. We WILL adopt to residents who live outside our usual radius IF your local humane society (or Shelter) will conduct a home visit and act as our agent in case the adoption proves to be less than perfect or you are no longer able or willing to provide for the animal. This is for our animal's safety net to ensure the animal is returned to us IF you will not transport back to us. In addition we would require 3 personal references. All are dependent on your state laws for owner surrender. It is our policy NOT to adopt to applicants with intact (unaltered) pets. If you agree to get your pets spayed/neutered, after the fact, we WILL adopt to you. This is our continuing effort to ensure the control of the animal pet population, and prevent animals from entering the Shelter. There MAY be extenuating circumstances (eg, a 16 yr old senior dog or cat that is too aged to be altered). We make these considerations on a case by case basis. It is not first come, first served, but rather the best possible home for each particular pet.
