TAHINI's Story
Terrific little totsicle Tahini is another one of our special kitties that I have waited quite some time to talk about in biography form, as she sure has had her unfair share of trials and tribulation since she arrived in October of 2021. She came to us as a double positive transfer from the Kent County Humane Society—and shockingly at only 18 months of age (she was born in April of 2020). She had a previously healed tail injury which could have been the cause of her contracting one (or both) the viruses, but she also may have sadly been born with Feline Leukemia and picked up FIV along the way. Thankfully she arrived into my care when she did, as lab work revealed that she was terribly anemic and had a low platelet count; a few more days without aggressive steroid and antibiotic treatment as she may not have been with us at all! Further fecal testing revealed that she also has a nasty internal protozoal parasite known as Giardia complicating matters and putting her 6# frame through the ringer! But in spite of all that was bringing her down, we were buoyed by her undefeatable spirit and her will to not only live, but thrive! Now that isn’t to say she hasn’t had her share of significant bumps along the way, as she has battled chronic upper respiratory infections, a middle ear infection, persistent fevers and oral inflammation known as stomatitis, but time after time she prevails—and that is HUGE!
I can’t say we will actually adopt out our petite little princess to anyone other than a volunteer who is extremely familiar with her medical issues, or someone who has had in depth experience with cats having both viruses, but I did want to tell her story so that everyone of our fans can see what a remarkable force to be reckoned with she is! I asked our shelter manager for a synopsis of Tahini’s amazing personality, as she spends 5 days a week admiring the little dynamo:
“Tahini is the sweetest, teeny lady and I'm so glad she found her way to us. She loves nothing more than sitting on the window ledge peering outside from the comforts of inside. She LOVES basking gloriously in those windows, bird watching, and sleeping contentedly in the sunshine. She gets along well with everyone, but does prefer her own space at times. She's been the perfect girl with excellent manners and couldn’t enjoy attention from the volunteers (and visitors) more! To me, she would make the perfect addition to a family with another FeLV cat. Being double positive, I worry she will get overlooked and its just not fair since she is such a sweet girl. I'm a softy for the double positives and wish that everyone was educated on FIV/FeLV enough to realize that cats like Tahini deserve a home just like any other adoptable cat.”
Even though her life span will be shorter than an average cat, any time spent with Tahini is to be treasured, as she is one of our most precious gems here at our sanctuary—and has become one of our all-time favorites
