Sundae's Story

Meet Sundae, a beautiful calico around 4–5 years old, who is looking for a very special foster or adoptive home. She is a playful, curious girl who loves both interactive and independent play, especially when wand toys are involved. Sundae also enjoys gentle affection and particularly enjoys neck and bum scritches, which can quickly ignite her purr powerful motor.

Sundae is a special-needs cat—not because she isn’t wonderful (she truly is), but because she requires a patient, attentive home that can meet her where she’s at. In terms of diet, Sundae has shown signs of allergies, and a chicken-free diet has been very easy to maintain. Medically, Sundae was rescued with an old poorly healed hip injury, so she receives daily pain medication and laxative mixed into her meals to keep her comfortable long-term. Sundae is successfully trained to use a microchip feeder, making her care very manageable once set up.

Behaviorally, Sundae has made incredible progress through dedicated, gentle socialization. Sundae is very shy and sensitive, and her adopter must be comfortable moving slowly, respecting her boundaries, and celebrating small wins. She thrives in calm, predictable environments. Once Sundae feels safe, her personality truly shines (just like her beautiful green eyes!)

One of the most important things to know about Sundae is that she’ll do best with another cat. She gains confidence and comes out of her shell much more when she has a feline companion, especially a friendly male cat. She loves all cats though, and the presence of another feline friend brings her out of her shell to (ironically) seek attention from her people at the same time. (Note: Sundae may be fearful, but she has never shown any signs of aggression.)

Sundae is perfect for someone who:
- Has interest in shy or fearful cats and/or is willing to learn
- Is patient, observant, and kind
- Understands that progress may be slow—but deeply rewarding
- Already has a friendly cat or is open to adopting one alongside her

With time, consistency, and companionship, Sundae continues to blossom more every day. She may take longer to trust—but when she does, she’s a truly special friend.

Backyard Cats of Bed-Stuy's Adoption Policy
I ask that everyone interested in adopting a cat from me starts the application process by filling out my adoption application! The more details you can provide, the better. You can find the app here: https://www.backyardcatsofbedstuy.com/adoption-application Once I've received your application, if I'm interested in moving forward I'll reach out to schedule a Zoom call (or sometimes an in-person meeting, where possible). I often have the foster join as well to talk more specifically about each cat's personality and needs. If the meet-and-greet goes well, and if requested, the potential adopter can arrange a time to meet the cat(s) at their foster homes, or they can start out with a trial "foster-to-adopt" period of one month, to make sure it is a good fit for both cats and humans. A cat isn't considered "fully adopted" until they have been through proper vetting (spayed or neutered, given rabies and FVRCP vaccines, tested for FeLV and FIV, microchipped, and dewormed and treated for fleas). I love to stay in touch with my adopters and often receive updates about their new pets thriving in their forever homes!
