SULLY's Story
Sully came to the center on 10/27/25 scared and completely shut down. In foster, he hid and cowered for a full month before finally beginning to trust. Now, he is a super playfully and happy “chill on the couch and watching TV” kind of guy. Sully would like his adopter to know the 3-3-3 rule when adopting a new pet: First 3 DAYS- freeze, flight, fight, fawn due to fear is normal (Sully freezes and needs a place to hide). First 3 WEEKS- fearful but learning routines, smells, sounds, layouts (Sully is very smart and learns routines quickly). FIRST 3 MONTHS- trust builds, pet claims territory, personality shows (Sully is slow to warm up, but is totally worth the wait). At approximately 3 years old, Sully will feel like an old soul. Don’t let that cranky old man act fool you. Beyond that aloof, lazy cat that appears unwilling to put up with commotion and activity, is a very curious fellow who secretly wants an adventurous life. He has a serious hunting instinct and playful side that craves creative enrichment (puzzles, mazes, slow feeder toys, new places and things to explore). A wand toy (favorite attachment is wiggle worm teaser wand toy, see Amazon) really brings out his inner kitten. He also loves laser pointers, any toy that dangles on elastic bands, puff balls, and auto toys (electronic motion/moving toys) for sporadic independent play sessions when his owners are not available to play with him. He needs routine play sessions though-out the day and evenings to keep him happy and healthy. If toy mice and puff ball toys sit on the floor all day untouched, note that they will go missing in the dark of the night. Midnight Zoomies usually lead to those kids of toys going missing. Pro tip: they can usually be found under rugs/furniture , behind furniture/doors, or at the bottom of stairs wells. If you have a busy work schedule, don’t worry. Sully is good about learning routine and will be waiting for you to come home and play. He is fully litter box trained and furniture safe as long as you provide him with appropriate scratching post tools (he likes soft rope and carpet posts as well as cat trees with hiding box beds). He does allow nail trims and grooming, but only after he builds trust with you. He can be picked up or held in short spurts, but he is not happy about it. Allowing him to come to you is where the real magic happens. He does like to snuggle up on the laps of his favorite people for chill TV time and will settle in at the foot of the bed at night when he forms that loving bond. Sully prefers quieter homes with no or older, respectful children. In foster, he formed bonds quicker with the adult males in the home, but soon realized that the misses in the house filled the food bowl faster. Sully also had a fascination with other kitten fosters. It’s possible he would do well with a pet sibling as long as their energy level is equivalent and they are properly introduced to each other. He originally weighed in at a healthy 9.2 lbs. but he has a bigger than life food drive suggesting that food scarcity may have been an issue for him at some point. Now that he is settled in and living the good life in foster care, his true appetite is definitely showing. He is a beggar who needs a responsible owner to properly manage his dietary needs. Being that he is highly food motivated, a rare treat every now and then is okay, but Sully lacks the will power to be trusted with open bowl feeders. For optimal health, please follow proper feeding guidelines. (Depending on product- 1 can 3oz+ 1-3 tbsp dry food, or 2 cans (3oz) of all wet, per day, split into 2 meals). Sully is currently on Purina One Indoor dry food and healthy weight formula canned foods. He does not agree with any of the above serving sizes. He is happiest to have 1 (5 oz) split into 3 meals (7am/3-5pm/ 10pm) with 1-2 tbsp of dry just to snack on throughout the day. If (and only if) he has a highly physical play session before bed, I do reward him with an extra 1 tbsp dry food to hold him over until morning. Treats are limited to training only. Please choose healthier treat versions (raw, freeze dried, all natural) over kitty junk food like temptations or Friskies. He can be very manipulative and turn on the charm to get an extra snack, but please remember that an overweight cat is not a happy cat. You should work closely with your vet to maintain a healthy weight for him. Spoiling him or indulging his appetite can lead to increased risk of obesity and other health complications.
