Suki & Casper's Story
Are you an experienced cat person? Do you find yourself often drawn to the ones that need a little bit of ‘extra’ understanding and patience? Then, let me introduce you to Suki and Casper.
Suki (calico) is a sweet but suspicious girl with her own opinions of how the world should work. Suki tends to hang back and wait til you prove yourself worthy before she will interact with you. Then, she will sit in your lap – but only when it is her idea and only if you aren’t too squirmy. She is smart and learns routines quickly, but will freely disrupt that routine when she is trying to tell you something is important to her. For example, when we switched her evening food, she quit following the usual routine, avoiding the offered food, until we switched back to her preferred food. You may successfully train her to do certain things, but she will also be training you! Suki values her freedom and independence more than anything and she will not be swayed by bribes/treats, so you need to make her *want* to do the thing or it is unlikely to happen. Suki’s favorite things are: heat vents, sun spots, springs, caves, windows, and Casper.

Casper (ginger/white) is the braver of the two, but still very cautious about new things. He likes to observe or explore independently at first. Once he’s decided you are OK, he is a positive lovebug! He loves laps and is happy to surf your lap if you need to squirm a bit. If you are doing something, he’s probably nearby and will occasionally “shark” your legs to let you know he’s right there. Casper values food above all things and you can get him to do just about anything with the proper amount of bribery. One full nail trim costs one full tube of Churu. What he doesn’t do particularly well yet is ‘share’ but he is learning! He’s not aggressive just enthusiastic and does not understand leaving food unattended to “come back to.” We separate the two for feeding time so they can each eat how they prefer. Casper’s favorite things are: food, snoopervising, hiding under blankets or in his cave, food, chasing his tail, Suki and food.

While Casper is the Advanced Scout, Suki is definitely The Boss. He gets to do whatever he wants right up until she says stop – and then he does, promptly. She sends him out to do recon while she hangs back and observes. Suki learns a lot from watching him interact with humans and continues to grow and blossom.

Suki and Casper were both neighborhood strays that were trapped independently. They met in foster care and have been each other’s best friends ever since. Casper is a typical housecat now, but Suki is still learning. For example, Casper thinks nothing of escorting you into the bathroom and Suki still thinks that’s just weird. She’s not going into a small room with no exit by choice. Nuh-uh. She is becoming bathroom-curious, though. ?

Suki has a minor medical issue that is stable. She had an encounter with another animal while she was stray and they slashed the side of her face. That was entirely healed before she was trapped, but because she did not receive vet care, it healed with a small hole in the side of her face. Saliva drips out of that hole whenever she eats or grooms. We’ve had this thoroughly vet checked and are as sure as we can be that this is not causing her any problems. It does mean she needs a little extra help grooming that small area from time to time as the fur can get spiky. Since she’s been bonded with Casper, he does a great job helping with the extra grooming and we really only need to help about once a week now.

Suki and Casper are looking for a home that will understand their past and help them continue to grow into confident housecats. They would do best with people who know cats well and who are willing to do a bit of adapting themselves. Both Suki and Casper “speak cat” well and would likely do well in a home with other cats, too.
