Spirit and Saint's Story
Spirit curls up on your chest, both of your arms cradling him, and he looks up at you with soft, contented eyes. He’ll nuzzle your chin with his head, his rumbling purr more felt than heard. Love this pure—the kind of love a child has for their favorite stuffed animal—makes everything else feel like it’ll be okay. Cats aren’t a form of antidepressant, but these boys will have you second-guessing the FDA’s authority on the subject.

Like his brother, Saint lives for human attention. He will flop in your walking path as a reminder that you should be showing him affection during your waking hours. Hardwood surfaces enable the option of spinning him in circles when he does this. If you pull out your phone while snuggling, they’ll try to refocus your wandering attention, gently but firmly redirecting it to themselves. Sometimes this is in the form of a paw lowering your phone-hand, sometimes they’ll physically move between you and the screen. On rare occasions, they may join you in watching the moving shapes and helpfully tap any sufficiently-prey-like things (or bop it out of your hand entirely).

Saint and Spirit play with a level of energy which, in humans, can’t be achieved without near-lethal levels of caffeine. These boys play fetch and achieve speeds so great you’ll want to rename them Sprint and Spirit Airlines. During play, they run back and forth room to room, as though the FitnessGram PACER Test™ were a full-on career path instead of a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues. The 20 meter Pacer test will begin in 30 seconds. Line up at the start. The running speed starts slowly, but gets faster each minute after you hear this signal: [BOOP]

Their foster parent say: "Of the 27 cats we’ve fostered, Saint and Spirit stand tall as the most affectionate pair". How fully and freely they give affection can make your heart swell to twice its normal size, so ask your cardiologist whether adoption is right for you. .

If you live in Chicago and are interested in learning more about Spirit and Saint, please contact Toni McNaughton at tonimcn@rcn.com and Lisa Ward at catladychicago@yahoo.com.
