Shug Avery's Story

Shug Avery is a sleek black Domestic Shorthair with a mysterious past and a very convincing redemption arc. When she first arrived at the shelter, she kept to the shadows like a true undercover operative-observing, plotting, pretending she definitely didn't need anyone. Investigators suspect a former life of high-level mischief and international sass operations.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of our staff (and a strong plea deal involving patience... and a lot of treats), Shug has officially given up her life of crime! These days, she's all about rolling over for belly rubs, purring like a motorboat during head scratches, and stealing laps instead of your wallet.

Now, full disclosure: while she's fully retired from anything violent or sketchy, Shug may still dabble in petty theft-your heart, your favorite chair, maybe even a cozy spot you were just about to lay in. Occasionally, when she's feeling afraid in new situations, she might issue a polite warning tap (no claws, no malice). Boundaries are important, even for reformed criminals.

Shug is sweet, affectionate, and deeply loyal once she trusts you. She's looking for a calm home where she can keep working on her glow up, soak up love, and live her best lawful life as a professional snuggler. If you're ready to welcome a former bad girl with a heart of gold, come meet Shug Avery-she'll be serving life... on your couch.

Smyth Animal Rescue's Adoption Policy
We are open to the public 11 AM to 6 PM on Fridays & Saturdays. We have several dogs, cats, & kittens housed at our facility as well as in foster. Because some of the animals are in foster homes & it takes a bit of logistical work to set up meet & greets, we do require an approved application before we’ll set up a meeting. Be sure to let us know ahead of time who you're interested in meeting so we can let you know if they are on site or in foster. The link to apply is bit.ly/SAR_adopt Our adoption fee for cats/kittens is $100 for a single or $150 for a pair. We strongly encourage the adoption of kittens in pairs as research shows they do much better, are less destructive, & are happier when they have another kitten friend. Our fee covers spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, FVRCP vaccination, combo test for the two major feline diseases, deworming, & flea/tick preventative medication. We do require cats adopted from us remain INDOOR only & that they NEVER be declawed. Our adoption fee for adult dogs is $125 and for puppies is $150. Our fee covers spay/neuter, rabies vaccination (if old enough), DHPPL vaccination, 4DX test for heartworm & three major tick-borne diseases, deworming, & flea/tick preventative medication. We require that all dogs adopted from us live indoors — they cannot be chained or live in an outdoor kennel full time. For all adoptions, we require that all existing pets in the home be spayed/neutered & up-to-date on vaccinations — we do follow up with the applicant's veterinarian to ensure these requirements are met.
