Meet Shortcake <br/><br/>Shortcake is a gentle soul who is still understandably nervous and unsure in her new surroundings. After everything she's been through, the world feels a little big right now. Our animal care staff is patiently working with her every day, giving her the time and space she needs to begin learning that people can be kind and affection can be safe. She may not be quite ready for pets just yet, but we're hopeful that, as she continues to feel secure, her sweet nature will slowly shine through. Shortcake will do best in a quiet, patient home where she can move at her own pace, leave her past behind, and grow into the loving kitty she's meant to be.<br/><br/>Shortcake came to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton as part of one of the most severe neglect cases our team has encountered. Thirty-three animals were removed from a residence in a Dayton neighborhood after humane agents discovered heartbreaking conditions-no running water, overwhelming filth, animals confined in cages layered with waste, and clear signs of prolonged suffering and neglect.<br/><br/>Since coming into our care, Shortcake and the other survivors have begun their journey toward healing. With clean spaces, soft bedding, fresh food, and gentle care, we've already seen moments of relief and calm-feelings many of these animals may not have known in a very long time. With patience, love, and understanding, Shortcake has every chance to feel safe, confident, and cherished in a forever home.
