Shadowy Salem's Story

Meet shadowy Mr. Salem!
Salem is a big boy with the sweetest little meow and chirp. :) He wants to be involved in absolutely everything and is basically a labrador in a cat’s body. He doesn’t mind being held and flipped all around. Wherever we are, Salem is also there. This boy will bring a family so much love and companionship; he just loves people.
Salem is around 2 years old. He is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated FVRCP and rabies, flea treated and dewormed.
He can be fearful and will hiss when meeting new cats. He warms up quickly to most other cats, though. He previously lived with a small dog and adjusted to an XL St. Bernese so he’d likely be able to adjust to a new pup. I believe Salem could be an only cat but he wouldn’t mind having a friendly cat sibling either to play with. He does play rough(likely taken from his litter early and didn’t learn how to play with cat siblings) so a cat sibling who is confident would be best.
Salem is from an acquaintance of mine. The individual lives with chronic health issues and found themselves unable to care for Salem during summer 2025 when I rescued him. Salem was then adopted by another family in August 2025 and returned this month due to no fault of his. The family had an established dominant male cat who Salem ignored and kept space from. Then they brought in a kitten who Salem became the big brother of and they got along well while the original cat did his own thing. Then the family’s mother had to move in with her male cat. What I’ve gathered is that Salem became overwhelmed and would become spicy when the other males got in his space and he would smack at them. He also started mounting the kitten as he got older which I believe was out of a desire to dominate. All of this made the family very anxious and they isolated Salem. Salem has been with us again for 2 weeks. We have 4 male cats of our own plus 4 female foster cats and 3 male foster cats. Salem was snippy the first few days but since then he’s been totally fine aside from occasional smacks if a cat gets in his space while eating. The male cats we have are also not overly dominant. I believe the adoption failed due to dominance and the cats feeling the anxiety of the family.
We require potential adopters to meet Salem in our home to interact with him and to ask questions. I will always be available to adoptive parents to answer questions and provide guidance. And if the adoption would not work out, we require Salem be returned to us rather than rehomed by the adopter or surrendered to a shelter/rescue.
If you’re interested in adopting Salem, please send me the answers to the questions below. Grassroots Rescue's Adoption Policy
When adopting a cat from Grassroots Rescue, you will be dealing solely with the rescuer of that cat. While we have a generic questionnaire for you to fill out, the most important thing will be for you to connect with the rescuer and find out more about this cat; discussing the cat and your lifestyle will help your rescuer know if this cat will be a good fit for you! Your rescuer may have a different application or different questions. Filling out the adoption application will answer the basic questions for your rescuer, but we look forward to answering your questions as well. The application has been pasted below, and you may copy/paste it into an email and send directly to the rescuer in order to hasten the process; alternately, the rescue will send you the application as an attachment. You may sign the application electronically.
