SATINE<br/>Satine’s story is a sad one—but there is a silver lining, much like her gorgeous coat. Her name means smooth and shiny, inspired by the luxurious fabric known for its glossy finish, softness, and elegance. It couldn’t be more fitting for this stunning girl.<br/>Satine arrived at Crash’s Landing on August 13, 2026, after being abandoned at a Kentwood apartment complex in July. Fortunately, she was microchipped, which allowed us to backtrack and learn much of her history—including her birthday: February 2, 2022.<br/>We eventually made contact with her former owner, who had given Satine—then known as Lily—to a friend several months earlier. From what we learned, her owner had needed to rehome her because Satine was struggling in a busy household with small children, dogs, and other cats who relentlessly chased her. Her former owner had no idea that the friend had ultimately abandoned this sensitive girl outdoors to fend for herself and was understandably devastated to learn what had happened.<br/>When I explained that Satine was now safe and in the best possible place she could be—under my medical care—her former owner willingly relinquished custody to me.<br/>And Satine desperately needed that care.<br/>She arrived underweight and anemic, carrying a significant Giardia infection. Her illnesses had taken enough of a toll that I became concerned about her heart. An initial cardiac screening test was abnormal, but thankfully, when we repeated it several weeks later—after her red blood cell count had substantially improved—the result was completely normal. <br/>Through it all, Satine has remained a remarkably sweet girl.<br/>And then there is that coat. It is one of the most unusual and beautiful coats I think most of us have ever seen, absolutely worthy of a girl named Satine.<br/>She is doing well at the shelter, but I think she would be much happier having a little more personal space, either as an only cat or with one compatible feline companion. She isn't particularly interested in being picked up and held for long, although she will happily sit on your lap for a while.<br/>Mostly, Satine is all about admiration.<br/>And after everything this beautiful, sensitive girl has been through, she deserves every bit of it.<br/>I suspect that once Satine has a home of her own—with a quieter environment, patience, and people who understand her sensitive nature—she will relax and reveal even more of herself. I think young children may be overwhelming for her, but her former owner reported that Satine previously lived nicely with a senior cat and a dog.
