Sammy's Story

DOB 10/2006 - Bonded Pair - Sammy/Ginger
Sammy and Ginger came into my Mother’s life during a period of dark despair following the loss of her dearly loved husband Jim and a special bob cat that looked more wild than domestic. In 2006, in the midst of loss, a call from a San Antonio veterinary clinic came like a glimmer of new light. The clinic said they had two young kittens in need of a good home - “would you like to see them?” It was love at first sight and the darkness of sorrow began to lift.
It seemed strange two kittens from the same litter could look so different. Sammy, the male, was jet black while Ginger, his sister, had the color and markings of a Siamese. These kittens became surrogate children to my Mother and were certainly among her most cherished friends. They lavished unconditional love on my grieving Mother at a time when life seemed too dark to bear. She returned the love with selfless abandon. No kind consideration was overlooked.
I often told my Mother, and others, that these two cats lived in paradise - a veritable kitty heaven. They usually spent their days as masters of a well-manicured and wooded backyard amongst diverse wildlife and endless possibilities for exploration. Fortunately, these forays always ended without incident and with big cat smiles. Nights were always spent indoors, usually on a lap or as a bed companion.
Sammy has always been friendlier and more outgoing compared to his sister. He knows no stranger and is particularly fond of men. Sammy would always approach visitors as if he had known them forever. My mother always said “Sammy thinks everyone loves him” which I suppose is mostly true. Ginger is the lady, a bit more refined, a bit more reserved, but very much a lover always looking for personal attention, a kind word and gentle hand. One thing they share is a lifelong bond. An unseen link that defines them and their wellbeing.
My mother maintained her home and independent life in San Antonio until the age of 85. Both of her sons live in other cities. Larry lives in Corpus Christi Texas and Mark lives in in Richmond Virginia. Mark is medical doctor and is well supported by a network of medical care professionals. Caroline, his wife, is an exemplary mother and manager of all things domestic. Beyond this, however, she is a model of human compassion and support. For these reasons, the decision to move my mother to Richmond was, as they say, a no brainer.
In October 2014, the cats and my mother were escorted on a two-legged flight from San Antonio to Richmond. It was done without undue stress or complaints by either my mother or the cats. Over the past few years Sammy and Ginger have begrudgingly adapted to their new life as indoor cats. Both, particularly Sammy, have put on a little mid-life weight, but appear to be healthy and fit. Sammy longs for his days as an outdoor explorer and will try to escape the confines of a house if the door is left open, but he always returns after an hour. After all he knows where the food and love are. Wet food (Fancy Feast) for breakfast and supper with dry food (Blue Buffalo) available as a snack throughout the day.
In spite of Caroline’s benevolence and love of all animals, she is unable to tolerate chronic exposure to indoor cat’s due to a dander allergy. I dearly love Sammy and Ginger, but already have two cats of my own - the maximum number allowed by my townhouse community bylaws. One of the reasons I love Sammy and Ginger is that they gave love and companionship to my mother when she needed it most. Now they are ready to share that gift with an open-hearted person willing to adopt. The gift they offer is not one-sided, however. The love you will receive is the love you will gladly return, again and again.
