Saint's Story

Saint holds a very special place in Despurate House Cats history. He was the very first cat we ever rescued under DHC, and he has been with us for nearly 20 months. When we took him in, we had no idea how long his road would be, or whether he'd ever be able to leave us for a home of his own.

Saint came from a Hartford colony and quickly proved that he was not going to be an easy case. He developed a laryngeal polyp and significant airway problems that required surgery and ablation. When the problem recurred, we had to go right back to fighting for him. For a long time, we thought Saint might simply be one of those cats who would spend the rest of his life with us in sanctuary.

While enduring everything he'd been through, this former colony cat showed us that he actually likes having people around. He has become affectionate, funny, and very much a cat who deserves the chance to have a home instead of a permanent foster room.

Saint does have asthma and this will be a lifetime condition but it appears to be well controlled right now. He uses an inhaler twice a day and takes it remarkably well. His treatment ends with a kiss on the forehead as his reward because Saint has decided that this is the appropriate compensation for his cooperation.

He will need an adopter who is comfortable continuing his inhaler and paying attention to his respiratory health. His primary veterinarian can absolutely be someone local to his adopter, but ideally, his new home would be within reasonable driving distance of Guardian Veterinary Specialists in Brewster, NY, where he can continue seeing Dr. Sarois as needed for his asthma.

Dr. Sarois has cared for Saint through a very long and complicated chapter of his life and maintaining that relationship is important to us. Saint doesn't necessarily need to have Guardian as his everyday veterinary practice but having his specialist within driving distance gives him the best chance of continuing that care if his asthma ever needs another set of expert eyes.

Saint really is a saint. He coexists well with both cats and dogs and greets everyone who comes in the house, excitedly.

What Saint really needs is someone who understands that a chronic medical condition doesn't make a cat fragile, broken, or difficult to love. It just means there are a couple of extra things on the daily checklist.

For 20 months, we've been that person for Saint. We've watched him go from a complicated colony cat whose future was uncertain to a cat who takes his inhaler, accepts his forehead kiss, and loves people.

Now, we want to give him something we've been working toward since the day we rescued him: his own family.

This adoption will be incredibly special for us. Saint isn't just another cat leaving foster care. He's the first cat who ever gave Despurate House Cats a chance to become what it is today.

After 20 months, we think it's time for Saint to start the next chapter. Even if we're going to have a really hard time saying goodbye to this one.

Despurate House Cats's Adoption Policy
The application process for adopting from our cat rescue includes several important steps: Application Form on Website: You must fill out an application form available on the rescue's website. This form will ask for your personal details, your home environment, and other relevant information about your lifestyle and preferences to help match you with a suitable cat. Vet Reference: You are required to provide a reference from your veterinarian. This helps the rescue ensure you have a history of responsible pet ownership and good veterinary care for your previous or current pets. Landlord Reference (if leasing): If you rent your home, you will need to provide a reference from your landlord. This confirms that you have permission to have a cat in your rental property and ensures that the living conditions are suitable for adopting a pet. Home Visit: As part of the adoption process, a home visit will be conducted. A representative from the rescue will visit your home to ensure it’s a safe and appropriate environment for a cat. This visit will also include meeting your current pets to assess if they will get along with the new cat. The rescue wants to ensure that the new addition to your family will be compatible with your existing pets and that everyone will feel comfortable and safe. Once all these steps are completed and reviewed, the rescue will make a decision about your application.
