Porter's Story

Porter is part of the Kitty Keeper program!

Porter transferred to Good Mews in 2022 from Cobb Co Animal Services along with 36 other kitties. He arrived at that facility as a stray. Porter is an outgoing and adventurous guy but unfortunately, he got off to a bad start when he first arrived. He bit a staff member and a volunteer. Then he continued to nip at people, despite always asking for pets and a lap to sit on. We feel he was probably overstimulated from all the changes in his life and going from living outside to a shelter with 60+ roommates. Because of this, he wore a yellow collar, so visitors knew to go slow with him. But we are HAPPY to say that after almost two years, Porter has not nip anyone and has graduated and was able to ditch that yellow collar! (*note, Porter was ill during July/August 2025 and was in a kennel. During this time a cleaning volunteer tried to prompt Porter to move to the different side of the kennel in order to clean, and this caused Porter to bite the volunteer. Trying to move him when he doesn't want to move is a common trigger for him. We suggest using dry treats to motivate him to move!)

Porter is a very social cat and gets along with the other kitties and loves attention from humans. Not long ago, while healing from a medical issue, Porter went to foster for a while, to just get a change of scenery. While there, he loved it! He helped his foster mom work and sat beside her most of the day, making sure she stayed focused. He loved curling up in the kitty beds he had around his room. Porter had never been in a home before and he literally thought he was in heaven! So we know once he finds a forever home, he is going to love it and will be a super companion!

Because this guy lived outside for the first years of his life, he is FIV+ (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). FIV is a virus that makes kitty's immune systems a little less strong so sometimes they get upper respiratory sniffles or dental infections more often. This is not typically a big deal, and we just want the adopter to get him to the vet sooner than later if showing signs of these issues. When he came to us he was also heartworm + and unfortunately it appears he has residual damage to his lungs in the form of either asthma or chronic bronchitis (chronic inflammation) so he is on Prednisolone. He is also on a behavioral medication which can likely be weaned in his new home.

Porter is an awesome, loving kitty and just loves every human he meets. He enjoys being petted and getting attention from staff, volunteers, and visitors. We just know that once in a home, his adopter will adore him as much as we do. Porter would do best in a home with experienced cat people that can care for his medical needs.

Porter is FIV+ but don’t let that scare you! FIV+ cats can live safely with non-FIV+ cats as long as the kitties get along. They can also live long, healthy lives like any other cat. Our FIV+ cats are not separated from the other cats in the shelter. To read more about it, visit our website: https://goodmews.org/wp-content/uploads/1115-Animal-Care-Feline-FIV.pdf

Good Mews Animal Foundation's Adoption Policy
Adoption fees vary and are published on our Adoption Information page. There may be adoption discounts available; be sure to check the Ongoing Adoption Promotions page for details. All Good Mews cats have been examined by a veterinarian, tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV, spayed or neutered, microchipped, dewormed, and vaccinated with age appropriate vaccines. Records and information regarding any other vetting, surgery, or blood work that may have been completed prior to adoption will be provided to the adopter. In addition, all cats receive a complimentary bag of Science Diet cat food and a variety of items generously donated by our supporters, including toys. You may submit your application to adopt a cat prior to your appointment but we are unable to hold or otherwise promise a particular animal until you have visited our shelter in person. You only need one application for all of our animals. Once you submit an application, please visit our shelter so that we can help you select the perfect cat. *Good Mews has the right to refuse any applicant for any reason. All submitted surveys become the property of Good Mews. Policies Bring as many members of your household as possible, including children, to be sure that your family and the cat are compatible. A counselor will then interview you about your expectations and guide you through the shelter to meet our many residents. After that, it is up to you—and many times the cat will choose you! Once you have chosen your cat, your adoption has been approved, and you are ready to sign an adoption contract, we will need the following: two forms of ID bearing your current address, one with a photo. If you rent, we require a copy of your signed lease agreement outlining pet requirements and the name and phone number of your landlord. Good Mews accepts the following forms of payment for the adoption fee: Cash, Check, Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Special Note Regarding Adopting Kittens Good Mews follows the advice of many leading animal behaviorists when designing our adoption policies. Research shows that kittens do best in environments with other cats or kittens because it helps them be better socialized, better behaved, and less likely to exhibit destructive behavior because they are less likely to be bored. As a result, we will only adopt kittens under the age of 8 months to a home with another cat or kitten, or in pairs from our shelter if the home does not already have a cat in residence.
