PONYBOY's Story

Our PONYBOY - FIV+ • 5 years old • Born in the spring 2021
Some cats walk into your life ready to love you.
Others need you to earn their trust.
Ponyboy is one of those cats.
Live-trapped by another rescue group and transferred into our care, Ponyboy arrived as an intact, battle-worn tomcat with a body that told the story of life on the streets. He was covered in puncture wounds and had fractured teeth and significant dental disease that required multiple extractions. He also carried an old, painful tail injury—a fracture and luxation with arthritic changes, along with a traumatic avulsion of the distal portion of his tail. We suspect his tail was caught in something that simply wouldn’t let go, leaving him with the short, crooked tail that makes him uniquely Ponyboy.
But his physical wounds were only part of his story.
Ponyboy had learned that the world was not always a safe place. He was understandably cautious, guarded, and quick to protect himself. He loved catnip—but trusting people? That was going to take time.
And it did.
Six months of patience. Six months of letting him set the pace. Six months of showing him, day after day, that no one was going to give up on him.
Because at our free-roaming facility, there are no deadlines for cats like Ponyboy. We don't expect them to transform overnight. We give them the time and space they need to figure out this strange new thing called home.
And slowly, Ponyboy began to believe us.
The tough guy started to soften.
Today, Ponyboy has become quite a gentleman. He actually enjoys attention. He’s learning to appreciate chin scratches and is even becoming more comfortable with being picked up—although he'd still much rather keep all four feet firmly on the ground.
Honestly, we think he’d be happiest right beside you on the couch.
Ponyboy was most definitely an outsider. He didn't belong on the streets, but he needed time to learn how to belong indoors. And watching him make that journey has been incredibly rewarding.
Now he needs someone to take the next step with him.
Ponyboy will need a quiet, patient home without children or dogs. He can still be short-fused at times, so his person will need to respect his boundaries, read his body language, and understand that trust is something to be treasured—not rushed.
He gets along with other cats, although he may ultimately be happiest as your one-and-only.
Ponyboy isn't the cat who will necessarily run to greet a stranger.
He's the cat who might sit beside you one day and quietly realize, I trust you.
And when a cat like Ponyboy finally gives you his trust, you know you've been given something incredibly special.
Now he just needs someone willing to take the rest of the journey with him, now that he is on the INSIDE looking out at how far he has come.
