Peanut's Story
Peanut and his littermates were abandoned in Boonsboro, Maryland, when their owner passed away and the home was abandoned. Undetected for several months, the colony became malnourished and wild, two or three litters of kittens were produced, and at least one adult female died. Neighbors were alerted to the colony when the tiniest surviving kitten was found wandering blind, cold and alone, spurring them to launch a rescue. The surviving adult male and female who tested negative for FIV and FeLV have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated and re-homed with the first-responder neighbors and the four surviving kittens are being cared for and-rehomed. Heartbreakingly, little Peanut has tested positive for FeLV and therefore cannot be rehomed with his siblings, despite his close attachment to them.
Peanut was grossly malnourished, weighing barely 4 lb when caught, despite being an unaltered 3 year old tom cat. He has since been neutered, vaccinated and treated for URI and coccidia . His URI symptoms have resolved, he has completed coccidia treatment, and he has begun to gain weight.
Peanut has a heart of gold and is gentle, sweet and appreciative of the care he receives. He enjoys being held and petted and is easy to handle even when giving him medicine. Peanut clearly yearns for contact with other cats as well as people. He is respectful and non-aggressive when meeting new people and cats but responds instantly to kind overtures with head-butts and purring.
Despite enduring a great deal of hardship and depravation, including extreme hunger and cold, and infections, he has never scratched, bitten or even growled or hissed at his human care givers. Peanut has a strong desire for human and feline contact and we would love to see this sweet, special little guy be able to live out his life in the company of other gentle FeLV positive cats. Community Kitties will continue to cover medical expenses. If you have room in your heart and home for this very deserving little guy please text or call us at 301-788-1574.
