Ollie's Story
***Ollie will only be adopted out to a home where he will be indoor only and one that is calm! He is declawed and has a history with anxiety flare ups***

Meet Ollie!

Ollie is a 7 year old Domestic Short Hair! He is declawed on his front paws, neutered, current on all his vaccines!

Ollie was adopted from HSHP back in 2019 when he was just a little baby! He was loved very much by his family, but due to some big changes happening in a growing family, he has begun to exhibit behaviors that say he is unhappy.

Ollie has lived with children of all ages as he grew up with them. He also has lived with two small dogs and another cat as well. He did get along great with them, but we feel that with Ollie getting older, he would appreciate a more relaxed home with little to no other animals and kids.

Ollie began to bite at the area above the base of his tail and sometimes would pull large clumps of hair off. He has been to the vet where they believed it could be linked to allergies or anxiety. They did treat for allergies and it did seem to help for a short time. There is a possibility that it is stress related. Some cats often behave strangely and it may look as though they are chasing their tail or will suddenly jolt as if they are in pain. This can happen if the cat is feeling large amounts of anxiety or stress. Most vets often treat with gabapentin, but can be easily managed if the cause of the stress is located and can be corrected.

Another behavior Ollie began to exhibit is peeing outside of the litter box. This only started when the family began to re do their basement where Ollie's preferred litter box was located. Once the basement was finished, Ollie would pee on rugs in the basement and around the stairs instead. It's hard to say for sure since we didn't witness this ourselves, but we strongly feel this could be linked back to the fact that he is declawed.
Some declawed cats have issues with certain floors and textures when they have to walk on them. Usually it is hard surfaces that cause the most discomfort. We are thinking that Ollie would be on his way to use the litterbox, but had issues with the journey and chose to show his frustration by peeing on the rugs instead. The family did note that they locked off the basement from Ollie and put a litterbox upstairs for him. During this time, Ollie used the litterbox with no issues and they decided to try again to allow him downstairs. However, Ollie continued to pee on the rugs.
Another thing to keep in mind when it comes to declawed cats is early onset arthritis. It has been proven that declawed cat run a high risk of developing arthritis as a result. Given that Ollie is getting up there in age, we can question if he is feeling pain on his journey to the litterbox.

We are going to keep an eye on Ollie ourselves to ensure there is nothing medically going on, but for now we think Ollie's issues are behaviors do to stress and change. We think Ollie would thrive in a smaller and slower paced home. It would be best if the home is mostly or fully carpeted and his litterbox is placed in a location that is easy for him to get to. While we are still monitoring the situation for ourselves, this is the route we are going to go when deciding Ollie's future home. He is still a good boy and a very handsome one at that. Some cats are just fun little puzzles in the way they communicate their pain and/or disdain.
If we learn anything new or decide other reasons for Ollie's change in behavior, we will update this post!

As always, feel free to reach out to us with any questions you might have!
