Odyssey is a 10 year old, true street-tested, free-bird of a cat that retired from his life on the streets and is now hunting for the perfect home. After his colony caretaker noticed he seemed to be having some GI troubles, they brought him to Philly's animal control shelter for care. Because he needed somewhere soft to recover from years of zero vet care and have a chance to decompress.
Odyssey is charming in a grumpy old man way. He is a true cat stereotype with very clearly defined “pets allowed” and “nope" zones. Pet his head and he will happily purrr and rub against you. Pet the “nope" and you will experience the old man grumbles as a warning. Ignore the grumbles and keep petting and he will nip. Though he acts like a tough guy, he is 100% toothless so the nip is more of a gummy chomp. We find it quite charming and silly! In his true independent sprint, Odyssey wants affection on his own time and manner - he does not appreciate being picked up but is always in the mood for some head scratches. When not asserting his old man cat-ness, Odyssey enjoys soft beds, good food and catnip. Lots of catnip. Preferably in jars that he can stick his whole head in. He is an excellent cardboard cat scratcher-user and dedicated litterbox user.
After getting his tummy issues sorted out, Odyssey visited the vet where he had some painful, no good teeth extracted and was neutered. His blood work was pretty unremarkable (which is a good thing!) though he did test positive for FIV, which we all know is no big deal. Odyssey is putting on healthy weight and will need to remain on a sensitive stomach limited ingredient diet, but thankfully it’s easily found in stores and not prescription (other foods cause a bit of embarrassing litter box issues).
Odyssey has clearly led a hard life outdoors that has left him with some scars and shyness but he is making big strides in his foster home and will be a fantastic companion for someone who is looking for an independent friend to share a home with. He is used to being around other cats but we have not seen him around dogs. We'd guess that he'd do best in a home without dogs or young children, as he's ready to max and relax.
Odyssey is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. He is also FeLV negative. Interested in adopting him? Visit www.cityofelderlylove.org to complete an online adoption questionnaire or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org!
