Mittens-Bonded with Bilbo Baggins - Courtesy Post's Story

Meet Mittens!
Mittens is a calm, affectionate 8-year-old Russian Blue male weighing approximately 20 lbs!
This boy enjoys being near people, greeting visitors with a friendly roll for pets, and relaxing in quiet spots around the home. He comes as part of a wonderful duo with his dear companion, Bilbo Baggins. While it would ideally be best to see these two bonded friends adopted together into the same home, finding Mittens a loving, stable home is the top priority. Therefore, if a wonderful home becomes available for just one of them, we would be more than happy to have him placed sooner rather than waiting indefinitely for a paired adoption.
FFOCAS is helping rehome Mittens and Bilbo Baggins after their beloved pet parent recently passed away. Because the family lives in Hawaii, where there are strict requirements for animals entering the state, finding a loving home for them locally would help avoid a difficult and uncertain relocation process while giving these sweet cats the stability and comfort they deserve.
Mittens top qualities are his cool and calm demeanor, his delightful playfulness, and his wonderful curiosity. The ideal home for Mittens would be a calm environment where he can have the space to relax and enjoy the occasional head or belly scratch. To help him feel his absolute best, Mittens is currently prescribed Reconcile (Fluoxetine Hydrochloride) to manage mild separation anxiety. He takes it easily with a small half-tablet hidden in a daily treat, and this simple routine works wonderfully for him.
Mittens is fully litter box trained with impeccable habits, using his box consistently without any issues, making him an easy and low-maintenance companion. He has only lived with or interacted with other cats, so he does not have known experience with dogs or other types of animals. Mittens has not lived with children, but when children visit the home, he has had no issues. He would prefer gentle petting, and a calm atmosphere.
Mittens has a wonderfully playful side and adores engaging with his favorite toys and strings, often rolling around gleefully as he bats and swats at them with pure enthusiasm. Whether he is stalking a string or playfully tumbling across the floor with a toy in his paws, his curiosity and playful spirit always shine through. To top it all off, Mittens is an absolute fan of catnip, which brings out an extra spark of joy and playfulness in him whenever he gets a special treat of it.
Interested? Please reach out via Pet Finder or email (ffocas4pets@gmail.com). We will ask you to fill out a rehoming application to keep this process as safe as possible for all involved — especially Mittens. Frederick Friends of Our County Animal Shelter's Adoption Policy
Our adoption process for FFOCAS and Barn Cat Buddies cats and kittens consists of the following steps: 1. Applicant requests application (from ffocas4pets@gmail.com). 2. Our volunteers process the application. Our screening process includes calling your personal reference, your current vet (if any), and your landlord (for renters) as well as a search on a publicly accessible database of criminal court cases to ensure an absence of animal cruelty or violent crimes. 3. Conversation/interview. This is a chance for both parties (rescue volunteer and applicant) to ask questions and discuss any concerns. 4. Virtual home visit. We may conduct this via zoom simultaneously with the interview/conversation, but if this is not feasible, we will figure out something that works for the applicant. The home visit is meant to help us point out any potential safety issues and to make suggestions to help the pet adjust to the new home. 5. The applicant may request a virtual meet n greet with the pet(s) of interest and we will do our best to accommodate. In some cases, cats/kittens may be brought to an in-person adoption event to meet potential adopters, though we caution adopters that most cats and kittens do not show their true personalities at such events. 6. Once the application is approved and we and the applicant agree on a cat(s) or kitten(s) that are likely to be a good fit for the adopter, we will arrange for delivery of the pet(s) to the adopter or the adopter may pick up their new pet(s) at an adoption event. 7. We do not require updates but we LOVE to get them; please send us pictures and updates. Often. :-) 8. If at any time, an adopter determines that they cannot keep the animal, we ask that they contact us (ffocas4pets@gmail.com) so that we may take the animal back or help to safely rehome the animal. Project Hope animals (designated by "Courtesy Post" on their listings) do not belong to FFOCAS or Barn Cat Buddies; they are still in the custody and care of the owners wishing to rehome them. For these pets, the process starts with an application but the remaining steps may vary according to the wishes of the rehoming owner. We facilitate, advise, conduct our criminal background check, and we do our best to help answer adopters' questions, but we do not dictate to the animal's current owner which steps they should follow or which applicant they should choose.
