Meriwether's Story

Male, domestic short hair, white and grey tabby

Meet Meriwether – Your Future Snuggle Specialist ?

Meriwether is a calm, comfort-seeking gentleman with the sweetest little “smile” you’ve ever seen. This mellow boy is all about the simple pleasures in life: a cozy spot to nap, gentle nose rubs, and quiet companionship.

Personality & Habits
Meriwether is the definition of laid-back. His favorite pastime is finding the softest, warmest spot in the house to curl up and snooze. He’s recently discovered that laps are very cozy and is becoming quite the pro at lap snuggles – whether it's curling up for a Netflix binge or hopping up during a work-from-home session.
He’s a fan of affection and has a specific love for pets and rubs. Chin and chest scratches, back strokes, and even little shoulder massages make him so happy – but give him a nose rub and he’ll push right into your hand, clearly in bliss. He rarely purrs, but his expressive little smile and side flops say it all – this guy loves love.

Meriwether’s Ideal Home:
• Quiet and calm atmosphere
• Loving humans who enjoy couch cuddles and low-key affection
• No dogs, please – they’re not his style
• Cat-friendly or neutral feline companions are welcome
• He’s not high-energy, so a home that matches his relaxed vibe would be ideal

Bonus Merits:
? Very clean habits
? Low energy, content with short spurts of play (wand toys & laser pointer are fun!)
? Gentle, sensitive, and slow to warm – but incredibly affectionate once bonded
? Quiet charm and soulful presence

A Note on Companionship:
Meriwether enjoys the company of people and gets along with other cat-friendly fosters. However, he does not respond well to unfriendly cats or dogs, so his perfect home would be one with kind, respectful animal friends – or just his humans to dote on him.

If you’re looking for a sweet, quiet companion who will melt your heart with his soft smile and lap-loving ways, Meriwether might just be your perfect match. ?

To help Dante settle into a new space, we recommend starting him off in a smaller safe room so he can adjust gradually and feel safe. Reading the “Rule of Three” document included with the adoption resources will help you help Soup settle in.

Compatibility
Cats: Yes, a friendly gentle feline companion may be ok, no dominant cats
Dogs: No, hasn’t been a fan of the dog in his foster home
Children: Unknown but maybe ok with older calm respectful teens

Age
Estimated age: 6 years

Veterinary Information
• Meriwether has been neutered
• Meriwether was recently found to have an irregular heartbeat and further studies including an echocardiogram were recommended. His echo showed that he has mild heart enlargement, but with no evidence of congestive heart issues and he is experiencing no clinical signs of concern in care. No treatment or medication is required at this time, and monitoring with a repeat echo in 12 months’ time is recommended. Meriwether’s full adoption records and echo report are available to his adopter’s veterinarian.

• Meriwether has experienced upper respiratory infection resulting in weepy eyes while in foster care. This is usually caused by the feline herpes simplex virus and is very common in rescued cats and kittens. He is doing very well to manage these symptoms by having a common amino acid supplement, lysine, added to his food daily. A cat can have a flare-up of symptoms due to stress, such as a change of environment such as an adoption centre and/or new home. A document explaining this in more detail will accompany them to the adoption centre and be included with his health record card.

• Meriwether developed urinary crystals in his urine in the past (crystalluria) and it is recommended that he stay on a veterinary “S/O diet” for life, to help reduce crystal formation that could block his urethra. He has been doing great since being on this diet for many months, and some of this food will be provided to the adopter and is obtainable via veterinary clinics. Encouraging water consumption (such as with a pet water fountain) and feeding some of the prescribed diet in wet food form is also recommended to ensure he is urinating regularly to flush his urinary tract.

Here is some information on crystalluria in cats: (https://vcacanada.com/know-your-pet/crystalluria-in-cats )

Note: the urinary food is a specific version based on hydrolyzed protein, as he is suspected as having some allergies that have contributed to hair loss around his eyes, which has resolved since switching to the hydrolyzed type.`
• Vaccinated for FVRCP and Feline Leukemia
• Microchipped with life time registration
• Deflead and dewormed
• Six weeks of pet insurance
• Health record card
• Specific diagnostic testing may also have been done as each cat's health may warrant while in CatNap's care.
