Melba Toast's Story

We think Melba Toast was born in 2020 but don’t know much about her history. We think she had at least two litters outdoors before being trapped, but she is affectionate with people, so must have had a home at one point. Melba was an ‘accidental’ trap – we were trying to bring her pregnant daughter Triscuit in, but ever her companion, the two were brought in together. It is lucky for Triscuit that we did. Melba helped raise Triscuit’s kittens – feeding them when Triscuit didn't have enough milk, cleaning and cuddling them, squeezing herself into the nest to take up her co-parenting duties alongside her daughter. She also helped take care of Soda Cracker (Sodie) – we don’t believe she is Sodie’s mother, but helped feed and reassure her after Sodie was trapped and terrified to be inside with people.

Melba has a very sweet, gentle and nurturing nature and is kind to kitties and people alike. She gets excited when she’s about to be pet, crab-walking sideways in anticipation. She is nervous with new people and prefers not to be picked up, but loves to be pet and to spend time near her fosters. After several months indoors, Melba has started to be playful, especially loving to chase Triscuit and Sodie around the home. We are so happy to see this girl, who came in thin, dirty and exhausted, become happy and playful. She would love to start her new chapter in life with her companions at her side and be adopted with Triscuit and Sodie if possible – or at least with one of them. She is still a bit timid after her difficult life outside, so we believe a quiet home would be best.

NOTE 1: Spays, neuters, first vaccinations and vet checks are included in the adoption fee.

NOTE 2: Because a young kitten needs feline companionship, it is the policy of Cat Rescue Network that kittens 6 months or younger be adopted out in pairs unless there is another kitten or young cat already in the home.

NOTE 3: Cat Rescue Network only adopts their cats to homes in the National Capital region of Canada
