Maverick's Story

*** An adoption application must be submitted and can be found at www.bluesmews.org ***

Maverick says …

At first I was so afraid of the human touch. Yes, I had grown up in a house with humans, but they never touched me. And they were so big. And I was so small.

After I left my birthplace, I watched the other cats getting petted for so long. They rubbed against the human hands and purred, And the human hands petted them and scratched them under their chins and behind their ears. They seemed so happy. But what if it was a trap? What if the human hands were just waiting for a chance to harm me?

One day, I decided I was going to let a human pet me. I was going to do it this time. Really. For sure. When I finally nerved myself up to do it, it was 4 AM.

I jumped up to the bed where a human was. I found her hand, and I put my head under it. At first, the hand didn’t move. So I rubbed it with my head. Maybe it needed some movement to get it going. I was a bit scared, but I was determined. I kept on rubbing the hand and the arm. I even put my head in her armpit. I had finally worked up my courage - I wasn’t going to give up! And then the human woke up! And finally, the hand started petting me! And scratching me under my chin and behind my ears! And it felt WONDERFUL!

I am still discovering new, wonderful things about humans. I have found I can get human pets any time I want by just rubbing against them, so I don’t need to wait until 4 AM. I have also found that human beds are especially comfortable to sleep on when a human is under the covers, and that humans that are lying down are most comfortable to sit on. Perhaps next I will sit on a human lap - can I hope that it will be wonderful too?

===========

Maverick is a smallish female, spayed, and up-to-date on her vaccinations. She has very soft fur. She was under-socialized as a kitten, but decided that she does, indeed, love to be petted. Fortunately, she has determined, after some experimentation, that 4 AM is not the optimal time for petting, and again lets the humans sleep through the night.
