Marcel's Story

Marcel was adopted from PAL in 2022 as a kitten. When he was adopted, he was notably scared and a nervous kitty. Over the past couple of years in his home, we were told he was nervous and would come up to the owners very rarely, on his terms, and was just a scared kitty. Towards the end of 2025, we received a message notifying us the owners had surrendered him to The Animal Foundation. They said they recently got a new dog, and Marcel started peeing and pooping in the crate, then outside of it, and they didn't know why. Then when they went to take him to the vet, he bit one of the owners due to stress and fear. They said they attempted to get ahold of us, but we didn't answer, so they took him to TAF. TAF notified us and we picked him up immediately. We got him back on December 30th, and he was extremely scared, nervous, and petrified, lashing out when anyone got close. We did a urinalysis to ensure the inappropriate urination wasn't medical, and the results showed the only issue was dehydration, which was most likely caused by the stress and moving. It was very difficult to even vaccinate him, since that hadn't been done since adoption, but was required before he could go to the cafe. We kept him in the back in a cage to see if his aggression would quiet down, but it never did. We decided to try to put Marcel in the cafe to see if that would help him. He started in a three tier condo with a hidey bed to make him comfortable, and a note to all volunteers and visitors explaining his condition. In the condo, he was still scared and aggressive. After some time, we let him out in the quiet room to see how he would do. He never went after anyone to attack, just put his guard up if he felt threatened. After a couple of months of letting him do his thing, one day, we encountered a heart warming moment - we pet him without being attacked! We have finally gained his trust and he knows he is safe. He is still weary of new people and will have a set back in a new environment, but that sweet boy is still there.

Marcel needs an owner who is willing to work with him, allowing him a lot of time - which could take months to years - to get fully comfortable, and willing to adjust their lifestyle to his needs.

We were told he was in a home with other cats and didn't show any behavioral issues with them. And in the cafe, he has never had an issue with other cats. Other cats in the household may even help him adjust! However, due to the behaviors described from the past, he most likely won't do good in a home with a dog(s).
He would thrive in a home where he can have the time he wants to decompress and slowly trust people again.
