LOCAL CAT! Shadow's Story

PLEASE NOTE, IMPORTANT: Please submit all inquiries and applications to clayvillecritters@cox.net. The email on the application is the general shelter email, and animal control is using up their personal time off this month — if you send your inquiry or application to the email printed on the application, it might not be seen for a few days.

SHADOW came to the shelter at the end of October, when his elder companion came down with a serious illness and could no longer take care of him. He was surrendered with another cat, and while he occasionally enjoys sitting with her for a bit, he is also more independent of her than he is bonded to her, preferring to spend most of his time out of the cage, which she never wants to leave. Both cats were very depressed at first, understandably so, but within a few days of arriving Shadow decided to brave the environment beyond his cage, and once he figured out there was nothing to fear, he wanted no part of being caged. When we arrive to let him out, he is very happy to see us and get some love and some kisses on the head before exploring the cat room.

Though the other cats in our care bother him a bit, he doesn’t fight with them. He just whines at them and throws a hiss their way, and then finds a safe perch on top of the cages, where he enjoys curling up in one of the many cozies we’ve installed there. No fighting, just a vocal, “Please leave me alone,” and all is well. Lately he’s become more playful, chasing the feather on the wand toy when we spin it around him. And he comes when called, so he can get a kiss on the head. He comes off as a cranky cat at first, but you will soon realize, if you are alone with him and away from the other cats, that he is a very sweet, loving boy who just wants to hang out and relax with his humans.

Despite his heartbreak when he first arrived at the shelter, he’s made a good go of accepting his new, temporary “home” at the shelter. But he definitely needs to be back in a real home, where he won’t have to spend any time in a cage. He will do well with people of most ages, though small children might not understand that he will need time to adjust to his new home. Though he doesn’t fight with the other cats, at his age he would probably prefer to be your only cat, unless your cat is a very docile, submissive type. He’s only known bold lady cats at the shelter! He never lived with a dog, so a home without a dog is best for Shadow.

Shadow is 10 years old, in very good health, and is neutered, box-trained, current on vaccinations, tested negative for FIV and feline leukemia, and received de-wormers and flea treatments. Adoption fee is $50. Personal checks are accepted from R.I. residents only; all others may pay by credit/debit card or money order, payable to “Town of Scituate.” No cash is accepted.

For more information or an application, email ClayvilleCritters@cox.net or call the shelter at (401) 647-7200.
