Jonah FIV +ve's Story

Jonah showed up at his rescuer/foster’s door at the beginning of December (somehow they just know!). He was very friendly and always asking to come inside —but was very much a tomcat that fought every night, as he was not neutered and hence the territorial tendencies. Once he was shown the cat door to the rescuer’s empty basement, he started using it regularly to eat and sleep. He is an intuitive and intelligent cat who comes when his name is called, despite only having known his name for less than two months.

Since his arrival, Jonah has extended his territorial claim to his rescuer/foster, always jumping into available lap the minute the person sits down. He then enjoys petting, scratching of his chin and ears for literal hours. However, if he hears or sees another cat, he is immediately on guard and growls. As such, Jonah will do best in a home as an only cat where he can have all the attention he craves and no competition. He has not been around dogs or children.

When his rescuer realized Jonah had an abscess from fighting, he was brought to the vet to be assessed. It was discovered that he was FIV+ and has a Grade II heart murmur, which requires no medical intervention at this time, just continued monitoring. He is symptom-free and otherwise healthy. While at the vet, Jonah was vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and neutered. He did well during the vet visit, considering he had never been to one.

Having lived on the streets for likely all 6 years of his estimated age, Jonah has had lots of experiences that shaped his behaviour and reactions. He is initially wary of men and wants to run from them, whereas he is usually immediately comfortable with women. However, this smart boy is nothing if not resilient and eager for love, his curious nature and absolute desire to be around people will eventually convince him that people = good things regardless of the pheromones they output. Time, patience and love will conquer all.

Jonah is super smart, learns fast, and with encouragement, will play with wand toys and likely other toys once he figures out what they’re about. He loves catnip, hanging around windows to watch OutdoorTV, and has no issues adjusting to indoor litter box use.

This cheeky, bright, in-your-face and endearing cat is seeking a quiet home with experienced guardians who are around a lot to engage with him. Jonah is an affectionate cat who looks to his people for constant love and attention, but is still learning about boundaries and acceptable behaviours. He needs a firm but gentle and understanding person on whom he can imprint, and promises to be that person’s furry soul mate and lap buddy for life.

Would you like to make Jonah a part of your world? AVA believes that all adoptions should have adoption fees for the safety of the animal but in this case it will be up to the person who is trying to find Jonah a home to determine if there will be a fee and how much the fee will be. The person trying to find Jonah a home has covered all his vetting out of her own pocket. This included his viral test, neuter, age appropriate vaccines (initial FVRCP and rabies), flea treatment, two dewormings and microchipping.
