Meet Jak

Jak, young male kitten, DSH, brown tabby cat. Special needs.

Jak came to the shelter at about one week old and was placed into foster care for the around the clock care he would need to thrive. His estimated date of birth is 10/31/23. Jak loved his bottle and embraced it most enthusiastically. When the time came to introduce solid food, he refused to eat from a bowl. He wanted his bottle! Finally he tasted the babycat pate when it was presented to him on a tiny silver spoon and he dove at last headfirst into the mush. While in foster care, he lived in a home with other foster kittens, resident cats and one very sleepy old dog. He was very well socialized, very playful and loved to snuggle.

When a kitten has been orphaned so young, their immune system can be challenged. Although Jak continued to grow and thrive and achieve other developmental milestones, throughout his short life he developed upper respiratory issues which were addressed and treated with standard antibiotics. He would clear up, but would continue to have flare-ups that included sneezing, runny nose and eyes. The veterinary team admitted him into the clinic where they could keep a constant eye on him in a controlled setting and administer other therapeutic treatments and finally he was released into the kitten room to be adopted. Unfortunately, with a challenged immune system, it wasn’t long before symptoms flared up again and Jak was taken back into the nursery to recover.

A shelter is a very stressful place for an animal to be. Stress alongside an already challenged immune system directly impacts health. It is not uncommon for an orphaned kitten to spend more time in the nursery than in the adoption room and results in some young cats that grow up at the shelter. Jak is now six months old. He would do best in a quiet home with lots of toys and plenty of opportunities to chill out and snuggle. If you are interested in adopting Jak, call or text her adoption coordinator Alex at 330-261-3934 to start the process and set up an appointment to meet. Jak’s adoption donation is $45 and includes UTD vaccines, microchip and neuter surgery.
