HURLEY's Story
HURLEY is a handsome, medium short-haired orange tiger with a white ruff and paws. Very scared, at first, HURLEY would hide, but he eventually would greet the volunteers when they came in. He liked to be petted and scratched a bit, but he was still a little shy, especially when there were lots of strangers in the room. He also was and is still not a fan of being picked up.
He was adopted by a nice lady who he seemed to accept right away. She held him, sat with him on her lap, and he went willingly into the carrier. She knew he would need time and patience, but the initial meet and greet went so well, we all thought this adoption would be perfect. It didn't quite turn out that way. She had Hurley set up in an extra bedroom where he could explore and relax. However, the minute the carrier was opened, he went under the bed, out of reach. She tried to coax, spent time with him, but he did not come out while she was there. After several days, she asked for ideas and it was mentioned that perhaps the extra bathroom would be a better place for him to calm down without actually being able to hide. However, while being taken out from his safe space, he freaked out and did what most cats do-he aggressively resisted and he bit her hand. It was a serious bite, and naturally, trust was lost by both. So, after 10 days, Hurley was brought back and she did go home with a big, lovebug who wants nothing more than to be on a lap.
HURLEY is reacclimating to his old room and roommates. We still do not know how he'd be with dogs, but it highly unlikely that he'd be good with them. If things get noisy or chaotic in the room, he still goes high or hides, so he probably would not do well with children either. Given his nervous nature, he would probably be best in a quiet home with someone who has an abundance of patience and is able to wait for him to make the first move. It may take him weeks or months before he comes out willingly, but he had shown real progress, and he had shown he was willing to go home with the adopter. Perhaps next time, he starts out in a room with no bed to hide under, no unreachable places, just a cat bed, some toys, his necessities, and perhaps a cat tree under a window. The new person could sit on a chair and read, or talk to him, sprinkle treats around and quietly let him get comfortable.
HURLEY is a cat who needs a quiet place and someone with unlimited patience. He needs a warm bed, lots of toys, and space he can retreat too if he gets upset, especially until he learns to trust his new people and surroundings.

DOB-01/2023 Entered shelter-01/2024

To adopt HURLEY, please come to the shelter during Adoption Hours Monday and Wednesday from 4-7, Saturday from 10-1 or call 231-773-3030 to make an appointment.
