Highway's Story

It's hard to believe that Miss Highway has been with us since November of 2021! She's come so far and we are thrilled to see her progress! Highway can be slow to adjust and it can take months to fully gain her trust, so she needs a very patient family who's willing to give her plenty of time to come around. The patience will be well rewarded when she comes out of her shell. She's affectionate, playful, and well behaved. If you have a quiet home and a lot of patience, please consider adopting this tiny void cat! She's truly a diamond in the rough!

Highway is a tiny black cat with big eyes. She's about the size of most 6-month old kittens, but she's done growing. She is incredibly affectionate to people she trusts when she feels safe in her environment. She did not do well in a busy home with multiple people and animals. She is doing much better in a quieter setting. She gets along with the low-energy resident cat she lives with now, and she doesn't mind the dog (who ignores her). In fact, she's even taken to rubbing up against the dog and pouncing on the resident cat! Highway loves to play with toys of all kinds! That said, Highway is easily stressed and slow to adjust, so she needs a quiet home.

Highway needs a quiet indoor-only home. We would prefer to place her as an only pet just to make sure there are no compatibility issues.

She has done well with children (8 and up), but due to the fact that she is easily startled by loud noises and fast movement, a home without small children would be best. Highway will dart away to hide if she feels unsafe for any reason, but quickly comes back when she realizes that she is safe. She loves to play with feather wand toys. Highway actively seeks out affection from her trusted humans, but prefers not to be picked up. She is a "pet me" cat, not a "hold me" cat.

Fun fact about Highway: She sheds, a lot! Highway is (VERY) food motivated and loves when her foster mom shares a nibble of people-food. Her favorites are things with cheddar flavoring.

We are estimating her birthday to be late June or early July 2021. The vet suggested she may be younger than that, but we suspect the age discrepancy is due to her poor condition when she arrived. Poor thing was nearly starved to death. As of December 6th, 2021 (5-6 months old), she weighed in at just 3.9 pounds. As of April 19, 2022 (9-10 months old) she weighed 5 pounds, 7 ounces.

Highway was found on the side of the road on November 8, 2021. She was starving and dehydrated, and terrified of the cars racing by. A kind young man was walking by and Highway cried and darted out to wind herself around his legs, begging him to help. She was too scared to let him pick her up at first, so the young man coaxed her to follow along his walk until he got closer to his home when she finally allowed him to pick her up. She was given Frontline 11/8/21.

Highway received her rabies vaccination on December 6, 2021 (she is currently overdue for a booster), has tested negative for FIV/FeLeuk, and has been microchipped and spayed. Highway's adoption fee is $100 to an approved indoor-only home.

Silver Dragon Pets's Adoption Policy
If you've fallen in love with one of our adoptable animals, please fill out and email an application (available on our website)! We do require a veterinary reference, and a copy of your lease or rental if you do not own your home, to make sure pets are welcome. Please allow us up to one week to confirm your references and see if you are a suitable match for the pet you've chosen. If you match, we will proceed with an in-person meeting so you can meet the animal and get to know them. Sometimes it's an instant match, and sometimes personalities may clash. This is also a wonderful time for your other pets to meet on neutral ground to see if they get along. If your face-to-face meeting works out and everything looks good, you will be asked to sign the adoption contract and pay the adoption fee. If the animal is ready to go, he or she can go home with you right away. If we're still waiting on further veterinary care (animals undergoing more extensive medical care, or those with pending spay/neuter surgery appointments), we will bring the animal back to his/her foster home until they are cleared for adoption, at which time they can go home with you. Puppies and kittens adopted before six months old will require a (refundable) deposit, which will be refunded when proof of spay or neuter is provided prior to the age of seven months, and microchip has been registered to the new owner. This deposit is $50 for kittens and $100 for puppies. This is paid in addition to the adoption fee. All kittens and puppies 12 weeks or over will receive a rabies vaccination prior to adoption. All cats and dogs are microchipped prior to adoption, regardless of age.
