Grumpy (working cat)'s Story
Do you have a business or property where a cat can live an outdoor lifestyle with a safe place to eat, sleep, and settle in? Meet Grumpy, one of our working cats. He's part of our Working Cat program because he’s best suited for a more independent setup than a typical indoor pet home. Working cats fall all over the spectrum—some are fairly social, some prefer to keep their distance; some are very "on the job," serving as a natural deterrent for the small critters that sometimes find their way into barns, shops, outbuildings, or other outdoor spaces. What all working cats share is that they’re looking for a home that respects their pace and doesn’t expect them to be cuddly or constantly engaged. Here at the shelter, Grumpy is definitely living up to his name. The shelter environment is stressful for this poor fella, and he’s clearly unhappy being confined. In a working cat home, he’ll have the space and routine to decompress, settle in, and decide how much interaction he wants—on his timeline.

If you’re new to working cats, we’ll help set you up for success with information on how to get him established safely, what supplies you’ll need, and how to support a smooth transition.

Grumpy is located at our Michael R. Frey – West Ox Campus, 4500 West Ox Road, Fairfax, VA. We are open Tuesdays and Wednesdays 12–5 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 12–7 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays 11 a.m.–5 p.m. For more information on our adoption process, including requirements and fees, visit:
www.fairfaxcounty.gov/animalshelter/adopt
