Grasshopper's Story

Hello, I'm Grasshoper. I came to the shelter as a stray with Felv. I love other cats and would love to have a Felv companion along side me on my journey home.

**This cat has tested positive for FELV, Feline Leukemia Virus. This virus is highly contagious among cats, so if you are adopting this kitty, we recommend he/she be a solo kitty, or only be adopted into households with other FELV + cats. This cat (and any other cats in the household ) should be strictly indoors, in order to both protect this cat as well as to prevent transmission to other cats. The virus can be transmitted by bite or by body fluids over time, including normal activities of living, such as grooming, sharing food bowls and litterboxes. A few lucky cats will clear the virus once exposed, and there are some more sophisticated tests to check for this over time, which you can pursue with your veterinarian after adoption if you choose. However, for those cats who remain positive, they are more likely to be susceptible to infections and less likely for their immune system to be able to handle infections naturally; so if your cat appears ill, it is best to take him/her to the vet as soon as any symptoms are noticed, rather than waiting. In addition, FELV + cats are more susceptible to tumors of the blood or bone marrow, including leukemia among other diseases, and are also more susceptible to anemia and other conditions. We recommend at least twice yearly wellness exams by your veterinarian, as conditions detected early are more likely to respond better to treatment.
