Graeme's Story

Graeme was a neighbourhood stray for at least a couple of years. The person who finally took him in had seen him infrequently during that time but in early January 2025, he came to her door and asked to be let in. His weight was okay but he needed to be vetted. Over the next few weeks, he was neutered, screened (all negative), de-wormed and double vaccinated.

Initially Graeme wasn’t overly appreciative of being kept inside; however, he made good progress and after a few months, lost interest in the doorway. Of course, like any cat, you wouldn’t want to give him an opportunity.

Graeme likes people and trusts them. He is a gentle giant and never complains when picked up, carried around or if he has to go in a kennel for a car ride. In October, 2025, Graeme went on a three week trial adoption. It was a great match with a wonderful family; however, one of the children became allergic. The child’s allergy was not previously known to the parents as they had never had a cat. Graeme’s ‘almost mom’ describes the time they shared with him like this: “He is an excellent roommate. He did not scratch the furniture, reliably uses the litter box and enjoys being brushed. He’s a chill and mellow fella. He really enjoys being petted and being around people, always choosing to be in the same room as us – napping on a chair or at the end of the bed during story time. He’s not a lap cat but with time I think he could become one. He is extremely patient and gentle with the kids, aged six and eight. During the school strike, he had a lot of face-time with them and was a perfect gentleman. My six year old really couldn’t stay away from him, she loved him so much. He is truly a gem of a cat. He was just what we were hoping for and we will miss him a lot.”

Although we were disappointed that Graeme had to come back to PAW, the upside is that we learned even more about his wonderful attributes – in particular, his gentleness with kids. Because he was good-natured with adults, we were hoping he’d be the same with children – and he was! He very much enjoyed having a family all to himself and although he may be at his best as an only-cat, we won’t insist upon it. It would depend on the other cat’s personality. There are two cats in his foster home that he does not like but he is fine with the other four. He also lives with two small dogs who do not want a relationship and that’s fine with him. Within a couple of days of Graeme returning to his foster home, he had re-discovered his favourite spots and settled back in. We are confident there’s another lucky family out there looking to invite a magnificent boy like Graeme into their lives, this time for good.

P.S. He loves to help you change your bed sheets.
