Gizmo & Greta's Story

Three-month-old Gizmo and Greta are a special pair of kittens who need a special home. This sweet sibling duo came to us from one of the most overcrowded shelters in Atlanta. They were tiny and frail due to neglect and malnourishment but they quickly picked up weight and began thriving under the care of their foster family. Early on, foster mom noticed that there was something amiss with Gretas eyes. She seemed to always be squinting and she was clearly uncomfortable. A routine veterinary exam identified a congenital defect in both of Gretas eyes so she was referred to an ophthalmology specialist. Below are the doctors notes from that exam:

Greta was evaluated today for her eye conditions. She has a congenital condition called eyelid agenesis, where about 80% of her upper eyelids did not develop. This causes hair to rub against her eyes, leading to irritation and discharge. Her right eye appears to have vision and she is able to track objects, although she does have some abnormal fibers inside the eye and a small cataract. Her left eye is unfortunately blind, likely due to either a previous injury or a developmental abnormality. Because she is currently very small, we recommend waiting until she is at least 5-6 months old before performing surgery. This will make anesthesia much safer for her. The recommended surgical plan is to remove the blind left eye and use the healthy skin from that lower eyelid to reconstruct an upper eyelid for her right eye. This will protect her remaining vision by keeping hair away from the eye....

While Gizmo and Greta are currently thriving in their foster home, we would love to find these babies an adoptive home as soon as possible. SOHFGA will fully cover the cost of Gretas eye surgery when the time comes so that should not dissuade anyone from adopting her. Aside from Gretas eye issue, these precious kittens are perfectly healthy and so full of love.

Gizmo and Greta are fully vetted -- spayed/neutered, microchipped, FELV/FIV negative and current on vaccinations and deworming. The adoption fee for the pair is $100. We accept payment in the form of cash, CashApp and Zelle. You can apply to adopt by submitting an application at https://sohfga.com/cat-adoption-applications/.
