FF: Cap'n Crunch's Story

I'm going to take a chance and be brutally honest with you guys- Cap'n Crunch is sometimes a bit of a jerk. Does that mean that I don't love him? Absolutely not. But it does make it very difficult for me to find him a home. And I really, really want to find this boy a home.

In his best moments, he is sweet and affectionate. He truly enjoys the company of quiet people, being pet, and the occasional lap cuddle. You might laugh and think "then he can't be that bad!" But he is. Sometimes.

I've gotten to know him pretty well in the year that he has been at Forgotten Felines. Cap'n Crunch is very handsome- a big boy with a beautifully unique silver coat. He is confident and inquisitive. He tends to have no problem approaching strangers to say hello, and that is when things can take a turn. People will go in for a pet, maybe be successful once or twice, and then BAM! Cap'n Crunch swipes with lightning-fast claws, or sometime even his teeth. He has drawn blood a number of times, from a number of different people who have all had varying degrees of cat-savvy-ness.
Aside from maybe just a bit of a rude personality, we think the driving force behind his aggression is Cap'n Crunch's itchy skin. Even after extensive testing and medical trials, we are not 100% sure what is causing Cap'n Crunch's skin condition (especially as he's not the most cooperative medical patient), but we do know that it makes him itchy. Nobody is very happy when they are itchy. Cap'n is on daily medication and special food to help with his condition, but the combination of him being very picky and very smart means that it is pretty difficult to medicate him. We're usually able to slip the medicine into his food, but sometimes he knows it's in there and refuses to eat. So, his skin condition remains only partially maintained.

Like I said above, I really do love Cap'n Crunch. He might even be one of my best friends- I'd take him home myself if I could, but I think that would likely be a terrible idea for my other cats and the other humans living in my home. We get the sense that he would do best as an only cat. He also would not do well with dogs- we have seen the way he looks at dogs and honestly, I would fear for their safety if he got too close. The same goes for children. He tends to be more comfortable around women rather than men, especially men with hats, or beards, or loud voices...

So, to recap, jerk cat, bad skin, expensive medicine and food, no other pets, kids, or most men. Sounds like a dreamboat, right? I've included a photo of Cap'n Crunch and I cuddling at my desk to show you that even though there is a long list of things that make him seem like the kind of cat you'd want to avoid, deep down all he really wants is someone who loves him. For all his flaws, he's got a heart like no other, and I truly feel blessed to be loved by him (even if he does occasionally bite me still). I think Cap'n Crunch would do best in a quiet home with one, or maybe two, VERY cat-savvy adults who have thick skin and don't mind a rather daunting challenge. And somewhere that he would have plenty of mental stimulation- he loves to watch things and would probably enjoy either having a catio or a safe outdoor space where he could relax and observe the word around him.

Because of his unique temperament and challenging medical condition, we're looking for a Forever Foster home for Cap'n rather than a traditional adopter. That simply means that you provide a home, love and daily care, and FFSC covers all veterinary expenses for the rest of his life.

If you, or someone you know, have read this post and still would like to learn more about Cap'n Crunch, please give me a call and I can tell you why I love this maybe-a-little-bit-horrible cat.
