Felix's Story

To adopt this cat from Black Cat Rescue, please fill out a profile

https://blackcatrescue.com/adopt-cat-boston

Felix is estimated to be 1 year old, and is a playful male cat looking for his home! HE would do best in a home with another energetic cat. Here’s what his foster volunteers say about him:

How would you describe the cat's general personality?
Felix is the epitome of a housecat. He will sleep on your clean laundry, knock trinkets off shelves, chirp happily when you come home from work, try to trip you by walking directly in front of you on the stairs, ignore you when you call until you make the slightest noise about treats and then come running at full speed, nap at your feet, attack all cat toys, attack things that aren't intended to be cat toys, attempt to eat any and all butter that is left out, bash his head into furniture, rub against your legs, bask in the sunlight, and stretch out happily when you disturb his slumber. Just every bit the cat.

Does the cat enjoy being pet?
Yes. He enjoys being pet all over his body, although his purr is very, very quiet so sometimes you have to press your ear against his side to hear it.

If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet?
Felix likes pets all over, most especially on his head and back. He hasn’t shown sensitivity about touch anywhere, even near his old tail injury.

Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched?
None observed so far.

Does the cat come on your lap?
He hasn’t yet sought out our laps, but he is very affectionate and comfortable being close to people, so this may develop with time. He most loves sleeping on a ~2 foot tall cat tree in the main room by a window, where he can see outside or us.

Does the cat like to be held?
Not particularly. Felix tolerates being held in front of your chest, but is eager to be let down. He does NOT like it if you try to have him look over your shoulder. He expresses his dislike by growling unhappily until you put him down.

Does the cat sleep in your bed?
Yes. He sometimes joins people on the bed, especially at night or during the day when napping. One quirk is that if placed on the bed, he tends to jump down right away, but he happily hops up on his own terms and will sleep there for hours.

Does the cat seek your attention?
Yes. He jogs over to greet people when they enter the room, comes for pets unprompted, and enjoys rubbing his face and side against people. If locked up by himself, he'll cry for attention for a few minutes.

Does the cat like to play?
Yes. Felix is very playful, both on his own and with interactive play.

What are the cat's favorite games and toys?
He enjoys feather wands, lasers, an electronic spinny toy, and especially plastic springs, which he will zoom after and carry around. We have about 15 of those and have to fish all of them from under the couch every week. He can sometimes overwhelm the other cats in the house with how much he likes to play, so we make sure to get him jumping and running around a couple times per day.

How vocal is the cat?
Moderately vocal in terms of frequency. Not all the time, but more than once/day.

What kinds of sounds does the cat make?
He makes a variety of cute noises. He's generally pretty squeaky/chirpy... unless you lock him in a room, then he'll protest more loudly.

Does the cat scratch a scratcher?
Yes, frequently throughout the day. Felix likes to stretch often and when the scratcher is nearby, he prefers to use it. He likes both the stand-up sisal scratching post and the horizontal cardboard bed-scratchers.

Does the cat always use the litter box?
Yes, he always uses the litter box although he is inconsistent about covering up afterward.

What food and frequency is the cat currently eating?
He eats both wet and dry food and has adapted quickly to our foods.

He can be a bit food insecure when other cats are around and sometimes eats too much too quickly if left unsupervised. We're working on getting him used to eating by other cats without growling.

Is the cat picky about food?
No. He is not picky and has accepted both wet and two types of dry food without hesitation.

What is the cat's favorite treat?
Felix shows interest in whatever the other cats are enjoying... generally Churu and greenies.

Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances?
No. Felix is extremely gentle with humans and keeps his paws to himself.

Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you?
No. Felix has never scratched, and he seems very aware of his claws and makes sure not to use them when wrestling with our cats or interacting with people.

Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you?
No. Felix has never nipped us, even in play. He does some nipping and biting when playing with other cats, which they do not always appreciate.

Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)?
No. Felix has never bitten and shows no inclination toward biting behavior.

To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful?
He can be nervous at first but is quick to warm up. Despite initial nerves, he is social, seeks out attention, and adjusts well with patience. His nervousness does not result in aggression or hiding.

If you have observed the cat with other animals, please describe how they get on.
Felix mostly gets along with other cats (except during mealtime), but he can be very playful, and sometimes can be a bit dominant/aggressive. He's shown some mounting behavior towards other cats (male and female), although he seems to stop if they get annoyed and smack him.

He'd probably do best with a similarly sized or bigger cat that's also playful and energetic.

Does the cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren’t covered by the previous questions?
He loves basking in sunlight and emits an adorable trill to protest any closed doors.

He also has the quirky habit of jumping down if placed on a bed, but happily hops up on his own to nap there later.

In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt?
Felix is incredibly gentle and affectionate and responsive to attention without being at all demanding. If he wants your attention, he will simply stand next to you with his rump leaning against your leg. Combined with his playfulness, curiosity, and friendliness with our cats, he would make a wonderful and loving companion.

What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them?
Felix's only challenge has been managing meal times and some of his play-aggression with other cats. He settled in remarkably quickly and has never been violent or even that fearful. It did take him a couple weeks to learn he was allowed on the bed, and now he's learning that the dining room table is not also a bed!

d up there.

To learn more about adopting this cat in Massachusetts, please visit www.blackcatrescue.com or fill out an Adoption Profile at https://blackcatrescue.com/adopt-cat-boston.
