Dusty's Story

The first thing to know about Dusty is that he is the most affectionate, gentle guy, locked and loaded with an unlimited supply of head bumps supported by a solid, comforting purr. Second to that is that he has feline leukemia (FeLV), but he doesn’t know it, and we’re not telling him!

Dusty strayed into the right place at the right time. A friendly fellow from the outset, he was scooped up immediately and vetted the following day. Estimated to be about 4 years old, he is neutered, vaccinated for rabies and FVRCP, microchipped, and parasite-free.

His FeLV+ status does not make Dusty”special needs.” It only means that his lifespan might be shortened, and that he should not live with non-FeLV kitties, unless they have received full rounds of the FeLV vaccine. Though highly transmissible between cats, FeLV cannot pass to dogs. Dusty requires an exclusively indoor lifestyle.

For more information on Feline Leukemia, please read this document published on the website of Austin Pets Alive! https://americanpetsalive.org/uploads/resources/FeLV-FAQ_2021-09-13-135357_nqib.pdf

If you’re the hero that Dusty deserves, please send an e-mail to theamericanstreetcat[at]gmail[dot]com and request an adoption application.

The American Street Cat, Inc.'s Adoption Policy
We engage in e-mail or phone correspondence and review an adoption application prior to arranging any meetings. Applications can be requested via e-mail. A standard adoption fee applies to ALL of our rescues, and an adoption contract must be agreed to and signed. A meeting with your potential pet in its foster home is required. An approved application and a scheduled meeting does not guarantee an adoption. A home check is required before final placement. We are not a shelter with operating hours, but rather individuals with day jobs fostering in our own homes with our own resident cats. Meetings are arranged by e-mail appointment only. See the "Adopting a Friend" section for more information. NOTE: If you have found or trapped cats, or need to relinquish your own, please contact stationary shelters in your area. We do not handle public intakes.
