Halfway Home Pet Rescue, Inc.'s Adoption Policy
Because we are a rural area, majority of our cats go to our partner humane rescue in Portland, ME, 250 miles south of the county. Local adoption fairs are held periodically about 5 times a year. When we are filled to near capacity, we will have a local adoption fair. Prior to an adoption fair, interested applicants must fill out an application which is reviewed by a committee to accept or reject. Rejection happens for known animal abuse, criminal background, no vet history available or other unacceptable living issues (e.g. hoarding, possible drug use in home). If application is approved, applicants are invited pre-fair hours in which they will have the opportunity to choose their new family member. During regular fair hours, other interested applicants can come and visit with the adoptable cats and if interested can fill out an application which will be reviewed later that week. Post-fair, the Animal Refuge League of greater Portland is contacted with information on any cats remaining for adoption, to meet their area needs. This allows us to have additional space needing emergency care.
