Captain Darling - He’s that into you and in your lap, too!'s Story
Do you want to be read all over by this black-and-white society boy? Your deepest secrets revealed? You may decide that's exactly what you want - please read about Captain Darling here and, if interested in adoption, please write in to philoctete@mailbug.com with your answers to the questions asked below. Everyone writing in with answers will receive a prompt reply (please make sure your answers are in the body of the email, rather than an attachment) - if you are seeing this listing, he is still in need of a home. Captain Darling is thought to be 2 years of age as of late summer 2025.

CD is a friendly boy and there's nothing he likes better than marking you as his own - he butts you all over with his head (especially your hand, so that you understand you ought to be petting him), weaves in and out of your legs when you are standing up, and rolls around in your lap when you are sitting down (almost as if he were rolling in catnip, but in a content, cosy way rather than a wild way), and he wants to make a visit to you. At night, he usually takes his place by your feet in bed (is not a suffocating bedtime companion), though he may also want to get under the covers with you or wedge himself (if you sleep on your back) between the back of your neck and your pillow (or the small of your back and the mattress).

He gets along with dogs and other cats, but can be a bit of a bully, and his feline friends never know whether he's going to fall asleep embracing them and grooming them or give them a bratty bat on the head. (That's a problem, if your kitty is submissive!) But he has the ability to be buddies with a wide range of cats and kittens of various ages and varying degrees of playfulness.

Because he likes to be in amongst your feet and hands and all up in your business, you may have to watch out that CD doesn't trip you up or slow you down. He so often wants it to be playtime or petting time, and sometimes tries to grab your paw with his paws or (painlessly to you) briefly gnash his teeth on it.

He's not a Velcro cat - he has interests of his own, such as scaling the scratching block and perching on its apex, looking out of the window, playing black-and-white things like chess and keyboards, and running around when you are trying to catch him (he's actually quite dim about this and very easy to catch, as though he's not really trying to get away from you at all, or forgets that he wanted to). Somewhat surprisingly, he does not like being held up in your arms and carried around; he is squirmy at such times. He's always ready to help you with cleaning chores, including making sure that the litterbox you just cleaned out is still functionally optimally, and he'd be a great choice if you want your cat to always be happy to see you when you walk in (purr purr!).

CD definitely loves to rub all over you, falling into you and sometimes falling over when he does it if you do not prop him up. But on a very hot night, he might not want to sit in your lap or even beside you in bed, and there are a couple of drawbacks to adopting him: 1) he is truly not a great traveler in a car (he might hyperventilate or drool or both when traveling with you in a car, though if you talk to him and pet him he does recover soon, knowing you are there, and he only meows in the carrier a few times because he cannot pant so hard and meow simultaneously); and 2) he does not like even being put in the carrier. He hisses (though he would never hurt you, even with your hand right around his mouth - he’s gentle and sweet like that, even when very stressed and afraid) as you push him in.

If interested in adoption, please be prepared to offer a vet reference (or a reference related to sitting or dog-walking or fostering/volunteering) or, failing that, a reference related to your job skills/employability. Please send in your answers to the questions below - thank you so much for your time!

1. What diet do you intend to feed him? Wet? Dry? If dry, please say why and whether you would allow free access to the food for grazing. Raw/homemade? If you intend to feed a combination, please give a sense of what ratio of wet to dry food you intend to feed him. And please mention what brands (of dry or canned [or manufactured raw food]) you are planning for him to eat. Thanks!

2. What are your views, pro or con, on neutering/spaying?

3. What are your views, pro or con, on declawing?

4. Can you think of any circumstances in which you would no longer want CD to live with you in/as your family? If so, what would they be?

5. Would he be indoor, outdoor, or both?

6. What sort of water would you offer him and what type/ brand of cat litter do you want to use?

7. What sort of domicile would you be sharing with him (dorm, owned house, trailer, rented apartment, etc.) and who are all the humans (if any) and non-humans who currently share it with you, please?

8. Could you please share something about yourself? What is your job, profession, or source of income? What is your age or approximate age? What is your lifestyle, what hobbies/interests/leisure pursuits do you have? Have you previous experience as a caregiver for a non-human (maybe as a volunteer or a sitter or dog-walker, or as a bunny or fish parent or whatever)?

9. {Optional} If there is anything about him that calls to you, in his pictures or the description of him, you could mention that here. Thank you so much!
