Butternut's Story
Age: 1.5
Weight: 11LBS
Fee: $40

Butternut is a shy but brave little explorer who’s slowly learning that people can be pretty wonderful. While he may start off cautious—often choosing to hide when startled—he’s steadily opening up and showing his sweet, curious, and gentle personality.

He’s a bit braver than his brother, Yam, and the two absolutely adore cuddling together. They would be thrilled to find a home as a pair, but Butternut would also be happy in any home with other friendly cats. Feline companionship really helps him feel safe and confident.

Butternut has met dogs and, while initially scared, he’s begun showing some interest. With slow introductions, plenty of patience, and the ability to retreat to safe spaces when he needs to, he can absolutely adjust to a dog-friendly household.

A quiet, calm home would help Butternut thrive. Once he feels secure, he loves to explore, observe, and enjoy cozy moments—always on his own terms. With time and gentle guidance, this sweet orange boy will blossom into a loving, loyal companion.

If you’re looking for a tenderhearted cat who needs just a little patience to shine, Butternut might be the perfect addition to your home!

At the Humane Society of Midland County, all animals adopted will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations prior to an adoption. Dogs over 6 months of age will be heartworm tested, and any dog with a positive test will receive treatment at No Appointment Needed to Meet Adoptable Animals!
We have open adoption hours, and walk-ins are always welcome! While filling out an application lets us know you're interested in adopting, it does not hold an animal, and applications are not required to meet the available animals. We do highly recommend and may require you to bring any dogs that reside in the same household, or that will be around commonly if you are meeting a new dog companion.

Want to Know if I’m Still Available?
Call the shelter at (989)-835-1877 to confirm my availability.
