Birdie's Story
DSH- Sleek black and white coat. White legs, chest and belly area. Black saddle, tail and cap.
ADULT MALE; Est DOB: April 2016
ARRIVAL: November 9, 2018
HISTORY: Birdie found himself in need of a new home when he was no longer getting along with the other cats in his home. When added him to our Sanctuary when space became available.

Did the name Birdie come first or did the cat tree? Ahh, that is the big question for which no one really seems to have an answer. Our good friend Birdie is almost perpetually hanging out in the top of the cat tree to the left of the door as you exit to his patio area. A Bird in a tree, right? To the left of him, you are likely to find his sweet, quiet confidant Willow, the tabby cat. Birdie will happily give you head butts and then gracefully hop on down to sashay figure 8’s in between and around your legs. He enjoys laps, being held and loved on BUT the key is that he needs to know you! Staff and longer term volunteers gush about how fabulously loving and affectionate Birdie is. He has quite the fan club of admirers! He really does love his people, but he needs a bit of time to get to know you. Birdie has done well with the other cats in his room but does not seek them out per se and can act as a bit of loner around most of them. He quietly goes about his daily business and slowly builds his fan base hoping soon to find that one person who wishes to be his new, full time friend.

Dec 2026 Update: Birdie has a new nickname and or a new trade. You pick! Uh, no pun intended. Staff will stack up bowls of dry food and place in a locked condo in the rooms as they work room to room offering up either breakfast or dinner offerings. Normally, the food is safe however Birdie was recently caught being the master "pickpocket" as he stretched way up and generously dished out kibble for himself. With Birdie on a special diet, he knows this forbidden food is a big "no no" but alas the temptation was too strong to resist. Besides this one rather large infraction, he's been a pretty good boy in his room and has minimized his skirmishes with some of his roommates. Yeah, Birdie!

Fall Update 2025: I love it when my human friend Scott stops by to say “Hi.” I’ll come right over to be first in line for some all over pets and rubs. He knows exactly the spots to hit and how to hit ‘em. I heard him comment recently that I’ve been keeping a bit more to myself which is true. I’m still out and about but perhaps spending a tad more time hanging out in my condo. For now, I’m no longer visiting with the top of condo gang who hang out in a huge pile. Just for fun in the past, I might jump up and give them a big hiss and then off I go. I’ve not bothered to do that recently. Their loss, right? Maybe I’m turning a kinder leaf to my roommates! LOL. In any event, I’m doing well, my health is intact (I’m still on meds to help deal with my self induced stress) and with the amazing daily room service and housekeeping service, I want for nothing. Birdie

More about me July 2025: My Buddy Birdie
When I started volunteering here 4 years ago, I didn't know which cats were friendly and which were not. After several weeks of various skin punctures, I figured it out. One of the cats that I took an instant liking to was Birdie and the feeling was mutual. He would come over to me for pets which I gladly gave. He wasn't overly demanding, but he hung around me until he'd had his fill. I never did convince him that other cats had given my lap good reviews, but that was fine.
It wasn't until later that I discovered that Birdie wasn't that keen on some of the staff. You see, Birdie doesn't like any of the other cats. If they get too close, he'll hiss at them and if they don't get the message, he'll follow with a swipe. This behavior would get him put back in his condo for a "time out". Birdie would be put out by this response. However, on the few occasions when I would do the same thing to him, he never seemed to let it get in the way of our friendship. My pal.
There was one cat that Birdie, well, not exactly liked, but didn't have beef with, and that was Cole. Unfortunately, Cole got sick last year and, after weeks of slowly sinking, passed away. It was then that Birdie started getting more aggressive, almost deliberately picking fights. I would have to put him back in his condo to cool off. But I never stopped petting him, letting him know that I understood and that this is what friends are for.
That was months ago and he's back to being the Birdie that I like best. My buddy.
Scott, CFC Volunteer
