Big Red's Story

Meet Big Red - a survivor in a really tough spot!
Big Red has been at one of our colonies for years. He avoided any and all traps like a pro. He was always very polite and let the other cats, opossums, raccoons eat while he kept watch and waited his turn. He would not run when we were around but did not venture close. He always knew what time dinner would arrive!
When he started to look ill and the house he was living under was slated to be demolished, we knew we had to somehow get him inside for treatment. He FINALLY went under a drop trap and we got him!
After all these years of 'knowing' him we expected him to be a mascot for our rescue. But best laid plans....
He went to vet, went on antibiotics and got better quickly. We had him neutered and updated all vaccines. Unfortunately when he had his FIV/FELV test he tested positive for FELV.
Now a quick explanation - FELV is transmitted to other cats through litter pans and food bowls - saliva and urine... It can not be passed on to other animals, only other cats. Unlike FIV where cats can be integrated FELV cats should only be with other FELV+ or in a single cat placement.
Also it is not a good idea to TNR since if they get ill they need to be treated if any symptoms arise. Their immunity is not as strong. This does not mean they cannot live long, healthy, happy lives.
So here is our challenge. To find a place for Big Red. Someplace where he can learn the kindness of people and be loved. Someone with the patience to give him time to trust and slowly socialize him to the good things an indoor life has to offer. We are here to offer advice and support along the journey but it is rare to find a foster that does not have multiple cats in residence.
Please reach out to us if you think this is a life you would like to make better. There is nothing more rewarding than having the trust and love of an animal so in need!
Must be located within a reasonable distance of Keansburg so we can be here to help if needed.
