Beautiful chocolate 8 month old kitten… with an issue.'s Story

Alice is one of those unique chocolate brown cats. (I will include one of her baby pictures in the post to show her sitting next to her black sister so you can see the comparison of color.) This beautiful girl was born at in a home with four cats who were all having kittens at the same time – Alice was taken into foster , spayed, vaccinated, treated for parasites and adopted out at about three months of age. She was probably the shyest of her siblings and took a while to come out of her shell, but has done fine in her adoptive home. They say she likes to play, she has done well with the male cat in the house, and while she does like attention -being held and having her tummy rubbed -,she likes it on her terms. She sleeps with her humans, and has adjusted nicely to the home but she is a reserved young cat.

Unfortunately, Alice has an issue- and that is occasional urinating out of the box. This was seen when she was young and first in the home, but in time it resolved – we speculate it may have been anxiety related, going into a new home. She IS litter box trained - this is an intermittent issue.Unfortunately, her humans have discovered she is using their dog bed as a litter box. And with toddlers in the home, they don't feel able to continue working with her, kids throw clothes on the floor and it's just too hard to keep track. Alice will need to go to a home willing to work on ensuring that her litter box habits are controlled. Avoiding dirty clothes or material items that have any kind of strong scent being on the floor will be the key to helping her stay in the box. Trailing different litters also makes a difference – cat attract in one box, perhaps a clumping clay litter in one and one of the others – wheat, corn or walnut litter in Another just to see what she prefers and what will encourage her to go there. Absolutely no lids on the litter box – that is a deterrent for many cats, simply removing the lid can help. And because it took Alice quite a while to adjust to the toddler in the home, we will recommend she go to a home without small children. Her personality will do best in a quiet adult home.

Alice is only eight months old, and her personality and habits are still forming. With time and dedication this intermittent problem should be able to be controlled. If you are interested in discussing this more, contact Nancy at grassrootsrescuewa@gmail.com
